You're crazy xD! Game is pretty fun, but because it's on a gameboy, it's sometimes clunky.

alphazeba 2019-04-30 16:20

This is really cool! I got stuck inside the trex for about 80hp lol. Pretty amazing, I'll get the unicorn someday.

Really cool that you made it on Gameboy, impressive stuff. Nice take on the theme.

pawciu 2019-04-30 21:20

Cool idea but I expected some links to emulators(if it works on emulators), so I could test the game without putting extra time to get it going.

owainb 2019-04-30 21:32

Innovative nice!

samuli 2019-04-30 21:36

@pawciu Good idea! I added link to the emulator I used while developing the game.

interesting idea !

Nicely done for making it run on a gameboy. It was a bit too easy since your attack drains, you don't need much health as long as you land the first hit each round.

Unfortunately I don't have any flash carts so I can't play this on my actual GBs, but my clone console runs it just fine! https://imgur.com/XsRdREN

Fun little action game. It is a little bit easy due to the rather passive AI, but the fireball for dodging is a cool mechanic. I think there's a pretty clear upgrade path for this game: more monsters, smarter monsters, and then some kickass music.

Great work! Always surprised to still see people making GB games!

samuli 2019-05-01 07:53

@jjjjason Glad to see it working on close consoles as well.

Btw. the dodging sprite is supposed to be a dust cloud, not a fireball. :D We didn't have enough vram to add individual dodging animation to all the directions, so we made something that works on all.

Yup. The AI would really need some more love. It is currently extremely basic.

This is amazing. Good job, man.

ace17 2019-05-01 18:34

Impressive! The controls are a little bit stiff. Made it to the end!

mamoniem 2019-05-02 08:18

Impressive! Amazing! Innovative! IMPOSSIBLE!

kromeboy 2019-05-02 18:06

Now I have to study your source code to understand how to make games for the Game Boy :-D Great job!

pixscope 2019-05-02 20:19

Really like a game boy game !

samuli 2019-05-02 20:25

@kromeboy This is a really solid tutorial series that covers basics of gb programming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIsWR_jLdwo

I highly recommend giving retro games development a try. It is magical to see games running on consoles you played as a kid. Tight and clear limitations also challenge your optimization skills, but are not overwhelming as old platforms are really simple.

estuvomuybien 2019-05-02 20:57

Something that's not made in Unity  Love it! Attacking and movement were kind of weird, but it totally fit the theme. Gotta love those graphics!

jcmoyer 2019-05-02 22:25

Pretty neat to see a gameboy entry. It's a little buggy though, on level 3 I got stunlocked by the dinosaur and knocked into a wall. I was able to enter an adjacent room without killing him.

tony-redmer 2019-05-03 14:18

This is so cool to see a gameboy entry! Brings me back to playing gameboy games in my childhood. Only complaint is the stiffness, but that's probably because it's for the gameboy!

potatolain 2019-05-04 20:23

Oh hey, another retro game!

Always excited to see other games for gameboy/nes/other retro consoles in these jams. The restrictions tend to lend themselves to short-but-sweet games like this.

I really liked the graphics you made; it was a very pretty game. The use of the theme was pretty solid too. With some additional time and effort after the jam you could definitely make this into something quite great! It'd be really fun to see more enemies, etc.

I always try to give a little constructive feedback when I can, so I'll admit, the collisions and movement felt a bit clunky. I was also sad there was no music or sound. (Though I've worked with gbdk before, and I know it's pretty hard to get going; I can totally see why that was skipped!)

Thanks for a fun entry!

Congrats for the technical challenge of the gameboy export! The game is simple but nice. There are some hitboxes imprecisions and I would have prefered the sword to bein the middle of the character. Good work overall.
