Hello, there! I hope you had a wonderful game jam. It was my first, and I am very happy to share the experience with many other game makers. I really like the feel of your game and the theme you used. I really think you have really good graphic concepts here. Thank you for your hard work and the cool game! (:

This one was interesting. I went in expecting one thing and got something else instead.

First off on your presentation: there's a mix of what looks like heavily lined drawn sprites, digital painting, and pixel work. I don't like the mixing of styles for this game, especially when the pixel enemies showed up in the dungeon. The hand drawn stuff was fine but mostly I think you should stick to one style in the game, although it could work. Also the text box was too large during the opening imo.

Anyway I was expecting the theme of Sacrifice to be found only in the opening story and then it would be a simple dungeon crawler. At first this seems right: you have a village that can cater to your needs through shops. There's the dungeon nearby that you acquire gold in to spend at these shops. But after you kill a boss and leave the dungeon you can choose to make a deal with the devil and sacrifice villagers to make the dungeon part easier. When it comes to buying equipment from this menu I wasn't sure what it was asking, which sort of made the theme stronger to me since a deal with the devil would be a tricky affair. I can see players going for this the first time and then learning the hard way that it has morale consequences.

The gameplay was a bit rough but that's okay for a concept jam game. The only thing that really annoyed me was that the character sprite is strictly limited by the angle at which we view them--you cannot slash your sword, or shoot your bow, outside of those limitations. Especially frustrating for aiming since you have narrow cones to the left and right of your character no matter where you point your mouse cursor.

However that's secondary to how much I appreciate the concept! I really like the idea of the dungeon crawling being difficult and maybe even tedious the "good" way and that you are heavily tempted into sacrificing people to make that easier and faster. If the gameplay and level design got a proper development time's worth of attention (not just a game jam) then I can see this being compelling.

Good job.

Thanks for the great feedback @thisismyjam we appreciate it!

The music is great but the combat feels sluggish. I think thisismyjam covered pretty much everything. Only thing I want to add is that the lack of feedback on landing or getting hit makes the combat very hard to judge. Snappier Animations and and better Feedback would help a lot.

Fun game but needs improvement in movement and hitbox.

ancalagon 2018-12-05 02:48

@poweranze , @jfraser314 , thanks for your reviews, and yea next time we will need to think more about feedback to the player ^^

I like the game!

I loved the D & D style!

boyzandgirlz 2018-12-05 22:28

Interesting concept and good visuals. The character's movement are a heavy but the averall is great. I like the sprites.

I'm impressed by the sheer amount of stuff in this game! The system is very interesting too. I don't know if every villager has a power (what do the priest or the guard do, for example?) but it was very clear that I would lose something. I sacrificed the cartographer and quickly regretted it...

I got a bug where during the level 5 I couldn't aim right anymore, my character was always facing left.

bendev-games 2018-12-05 22:41

I really liked the sound in the game, the combat was the lowest point but this is ok for a jam game, and i think the sacrifice theme was nicely applied. Overall a very good game, keep up the good work!

This game showed some promise, and it's impressive for the amount of time you had. In general I felt like there was a lack of feedback. For example, when you speak to people, clicking the mouse doesn't advance the text, and the text bubble just sticks around. I figured out that you have to press the spacebar. Another example is that I couldn't press escape to see a menu of any kind, or to see the keybindings again. Little things like this will go a long way toward making your games feel more polished.

As far as gameplay, it wasn't bad. But I admit I didn't make it through the first dungeon. Most guys took a long time to kill, and the shield that I bought didn't really seem to do anything. Finally, when I got to the tornado boss, I was never able to damage him at all. I'm still not sure if I was supposed to actually kill him, but my sword never seemed to do anything.

I will say the music/audio was very good! I liked how the music changed when I got to the boss room.

@guine, @boyzandgirlz , @eclahn , @bendev-games , @jequed Thanks for taking the time to test our game and leaving a reply, we really appreciate ! We will sure program more feedbacks in our future games. Indeed, the game is difficult, actualy you need to buy the right items at the beginning or the game is basicly impossibe... Our mistake. Also, when we conceived the idea, all villagers had a power. We didn't have time to program them all tho.

alexkishchinskiy 2018-12-06 22:57

Hi! There is a lot in the game! I liked all the characters in the castle - they have different roles, there is a feel of living castle! Overall, nice!

jynspielt 2018-12-07 02:15

Hey i wish there were Feedback on the Character when you get hurt. Through Audio or visual or both. Also i couldnt attack the one boss i fought any more after the first time i threw him to the ground. I liked the Story beginning and the coherence between the different characters.

An interesting game with a kind of mechanics. I put a rating) Please rating and me, thanks in advance)

steel-dev 2018-12-07 16:51

I think you did well on this- Sadly it was a little difficult to play- as in some of the controls were a bit wonky, aiming with the bow was difficult, and the melee felt a little weird- and the dialogue boxes were stuck on-screen, so that made it rather difficult to see what I was doing- But, can't expect everything to be perfect :D You still did great for 3 days :D Congrats on your entry!

yyz 2018-12-13 21:23

Great entry! For the amount of time given, the character art is really good, as well as the painted background art. I got really confused as to what to do in the game though. I first wandered up around the town wondering what to do, then ventured down. When I was in the dungeon, I just kept attacking monsters until I got really bored. I wasn't sure how to exit the dungeon or how to spend the gold, so I think some time could have been devoted to making the game more intuitive or instructions to guide the player. I tried pressing ESCAPE and all the keys but it seems I was stuck in the dungeon, and there were too many monsters to slay so I got pretty lost at that point. Nevertheless, it's an awesome looking dungeon crawler with a nice concept, and even a story! The opening sequence really wowed me.

eric777 2018-12-16 23:50

Outstanding entry. Nice intro. Really great music. Fantastic artwork. Concept was really nice, sacrificing villagers between stages.

I enjoyed walking around town and talking to people. Loved the village idiot. First dungeon was super hard (I didn't buy anything for that one, maybe I needed to), but glad the game would respawn me and let me continue where I left off with the dungeon boss. Purchase of the devil sword and the superior shield made 2nd dungeon much more fun to fight in. I was unable to beat 2nd boss.

doey 2018-12-19 17:16

Solid game. Really enjoyed it, and found it difficult to stop playing! I felt like you hit the theme perfectly and loved the atmosphere of the village. Great job. (Only wish it was a little clearer on what to do, and more polished controls, but that's kinda unavoidable with the timing!)
