Download link has expired, love to give it a go!

irwatts 2018-04-24 00:14

Thanks for the heads up @travis-spuller! I've updated the download link to point to my itch.io page.

Hey, have no idea how 7z files work. Sorry.

irwatts 2018-04-26 01:52

You can use 7-Zip to open them, but I went ahead and uploaded a .zip!

This was a very enjoyable game, never in my life have I played a rolling meatball escaping forks :D Great humour! UI is so polished and pleasant to look at, the controller works great. Graphics - masterpiece. The music was well fitting too! Wish there was another option to play the fork instead :D Well done!

masterkrepta 2018-05-06 20:33

The textures are simply amazing. I made it to 20th place on my first go.

irwatts 2018-05-06 20:34

@ildfuglen I'm really happy you enjoyed it! Playing as a fork would be an awesome mechanic for multiplayer too! If I end up putting more work into this project or concept, I will definitely try it out! Thank you!

irwatts 2018-05-06 20:39

@masterkrepta Thank you! The textures were all made in Substance Designer, and the materials use vertex coloring to add variation and some breakup. The grease mask is just Z projected onto the plate. :)

ajayajayaj 2018-05-06 22:48

I loved that! Please make that multiplayer :D

One thing though, I felt as though once I was selected I was doomed. I ran around in circles in second place for 3 or 4 minutes but they would not stop going after me.

irwatts 2018-05-06 23:17

@Ajayajayaj I may have to! Thanks for playing! :D About the forks, they always target the closest meatball, so it is possible to brush them off on others, but when it's down to the final ones the horde can get hard to shake!

rigdonware 2018-05-06 23:55

Very simple to play and awesome idea. Great artwork and very funny take on the theme. Great job.

pennycook 2018-05-07 00:21

As others have said, the graphics are pretty great. Good job!

I encountered what I think might be bugs... The first time through only two meatballs spawned (despite being set to 100) and I won rather quickly. There seemed to be some disagreement between the button prompts and the buttons I actually had to press (but this might just be my Steam controller being weird). Something to check out, anyway.

irwatts 2018-05-07 00:31

@rigdonware Thank you! I'm glad others find meatball based humor as tasteful as I do!

@Pennycook Thank you for the kind feedback! It sounds like there may be a bug with my async level loading. I pass the number of meatballs to spawn as a parameter when opening the level, and the default is 2. That info is quite illuminating! The issue with the controller must be a disconnect between where UE4 expects the face buttons to be and the Steam controller bindings. I will definitely investigate that further!

ajayajayaj 2018-05-07 00:57

@irwatts I think what happened with me is that all the forks became one so it was hard to fend off.

irwatts 2018-05-07 01:07

@Ajayajayaj That makes sense. I never got around to adding avoidance or collision among the forks!

jamblefoot 2018-05-07 02:00

This is pretty great. I wish I had some other sentient meatballs to play with, but just conceptually and everything this is pretty much perfect. Great work!

irwatts 2018-05-07 02:20

@Jamblefoot Multiplayer would be the best, but some AI-controlled sentient meatballs would also be cool! They could attempt to kite forks to you or try to force you off the side! Thank you for the wonderful comments!

slashee-the-cow 2018-05-07 06:24

I personally don't think it fits in to the theme that well (I'd just call it a "dodge the forks" game), but holy hell those are the nicest graphics I've seen in a LD game for a while, and I did get a nice sense of self-satisfaction from being the last meatball left.

Couple of minor problems: like @Ajayajayaj said, the forks merged into one megafork at the end (but I actually found that made things a little easier on me since there was essentially only one I had to dodge), and for whatever reason (I wouldn't know, haven't tried any UE dev work in ages) it triggers SteamVR to open when I open the game (I don't even know what it would have rendered on the headset, I don't have it plugged in most of the time), but I could just close SteamVR and play as normal.

irwatts 2018-05-07 07:31

@Slashee-the-Cow Thank you for such detailed feedback! The SteamVR issue is caused by me not explicitly disabling the SteamVR plugin, which is enabled by default on new projects.

zinkler 2018-05-07 09:09

The graphics are amazing. There's not too much gameplay to it, the forks are predictable and other meatballs are apathetic and noncompetitive, but I definitely like your take on the battle royale genre, the compass made me chuckle. Great job!

leonlaci 2018-05-07 12:58

This was a really unique game! The concept is really interesting, the graphics were good, the meatball physics animation was funny (but I'd never eat those meatballs :stuck_out_tongue: ).

Good job!

maz-hem 2018-05-07 14:03

while I was playing some of my food fell on the floor 10/10 realism

irwatts 2018-05-07 14:39

@Zinkler Thank you! I feel like the compass really ties the whole game together.

@LeonLaci I'm happy you found my game interesting! Those meatballs do look to be a little on the rare side, so your apprehension is probably correct! :) Thank you for playing!

@Maz-Hem Perfect! That's the kind of raw emotion I hoped to evoke with this experience.

deborah-soude 2018-05-08 06:34

The textures are amazing ! Wow ! Good Job !

ekkoekko 2018-05-08 10:42
