Still watching you writing down some description from your stream :P Really nice game! Good work and keep it up :D Also pls don't feel like you have to deliver your best performance every time that you make something small like that... We are gonna love it anyway :P

this game is da bomb,

flekcter 2018-04-23 02:11

nice sound design hahahaha, no but seriously for a what you kept calling a "bad game" I liked it myself, great job man!

sketcherskt 2018-04-23 02:47

great game loved watching you make it!

limekys 2018-04-23 09:59

I was watching your stream almost all time how you make it! Cool project!

Firstly, I watched your whole stream this weekend—I'm so excited to finally play this game! :3

Here are my thoughts when it comes to coding errors:

If I clicked upgrade but then had no cards that could upgrade, I couldn't unselect the upgrade card and/or play any of the cards in my deck. Anytime I'd try to play a card, I'd get the "Can't Upgrade!" message. Also, a byproduct result of this error is a random blank space in my deck as it grows from the "Reshuffle" function. (see screenshots: http://bit.ly/ToC-captures)

Sometimes the minions would walk over from a grass area to a cliff area, I'm guessing because of a bug somewhere in the collisions/path-finding code. (see screenshots: http://bit.ly/ToC-captures)

Programming errors aside (!):

As of this version, it's kind of easy to last forever in the game if you build lots of gold mines in the beginning, because that gold grows exponentially for the rest of the game and having only a couple towers is more than enough to survive the first few waves. A couple times playing now and I've gotten to where I have >2000 gold and have no problem putting down dozens more towers for an impenetrable defense! If you decide to polish this game, I would suggest tailoring down the endurance rates of the gold mines and walls—they last a bit too long on their own right now.

It would be nice to have an ability to break down structures for half the money returned or something, but that's nominal. Also, some variety in the enemies, but I remember you mentioning stuff like that in the stream.

Of course, adding some music and more sound effects would help fill out the experience—but what you've done with the code more than explains why these areas are lacking by the end of the 48-hour timeline. This level of programming is far beyond most everything else I've seen at a Ludum Dare.

Overall, man you know I'm impressed! Not only is the UI with the card building and the camera actions smooth and pleasing, but the path-finding and variety of towers is also engaging and fun enough for me to play your game more than a few times now. Congrats on a successful entry!

[Further, I'm a big fan of your work and your tutorials have been immensely helpful in my own programming growth. Thanks so much for what you do, my man! Cheers.]

Yep, @thani! That sounds like one of I'm sure many cases where things will break due to a lack of testing. Thanks for the headsup. That's pretty funny with the pathfinding bugs. It's all a bit held together with paperclips and frustration haha.

And yeah I agree with you on the all the design stuff there, lots of different ways to improve and I knew the difficulty was way off (and could sense the goldmines were going to be a tough one to get right) but hey, that's Jams for you.

Thanks for playing and for the detailed comment! -S

Really fun, I hope you expand on the idea at some point if you have time. Couple of glitches (not being able to deselect upgrade killed me at about 10500 gold haha) but that kind of thing is inevitable in the time this was made. I like it, I'd vote it up if I could :-)

Really cool game! Watched a lot of your stream while coding my own game. I'm really impressed with the amount of coding you did with this one. Really nice work on all the art you got done as well, a full tile system and everything!

nehvis 2018-04-23 21:44

I'm loving this! Sounds are a bit loud though :D

gno-evenimente 2018-04-23 23:35

This is actually a really good concept that stands out in the ocean of " x meets card game" entries in this jam. definitely just a prototype but I hope you expand on it. Makes me want to reconsider ditching GMS2 for godot..

really interesting game but! why destroying speed so fast? for this reason this game more clicker for me) if you add more progression game may to be super amazing! and i get bug wit upgrade card i not remember how but i think when i try use it i get new cards and upgrade card block wall card and make one free place like this card was used but still in stack.

smbe19 2018-04-25 19:51

Nice idea, but I think it could be a bit more fleshed out.

kami-86 2018-04-27 18:17

Was easy to pick, easy to play, some glitch here and there, nothing to do... it's a Jam entrance anyway. In a few time, you polished in the rigth way. (yes, it's a rime, sorry for that).

#### POSITIVE - Feel's good create the structures, I feel so powerful. - Presentation and Graphics are over the top. - Music fit nice.

#### OBSERVATION - Just the glitch of the card in the upgrade. (I thinking esc would deselect, but instant I quit... This happend 3 times).

Feel so polished.

That was terrific Shaun!! I would love to see it expanded though for sure, I grew up playing games like Warcraft, Starcraft, Age of Empires, etc.., this kind of reminds me of them a little, but having that "deck of cards" as a really nice twist. Has a pretty good pace to it as well. Great job man!!

jin9310 2018-04-29 09:18

This is very addictive and I liked it a lot. There are definitely things that would be great to be in game as well. For example some wave counter, enemies attacking from multiple sides in the same time, or some variety to the enemies. The cards also get bit buggy once you play longer as if you have everything upgraded you are still recieving upgrade cards, which is fine, but if you can't upgrade anything, you can't actually pick any other card. But the time is limited and I understand that it is very hard to put everything inside. After all I got stuck with this for about an hour, and that is great result for game like this. :) Great Entry. Thanks a lot

robowarrior1982 2018-04-29 15:43

A really solid concept, it's fun and dynamic, no waiting time, easy to take in hand we understand immediately the operation. Graphically it's honest, it works very well, the only problem is that it's not finished and much too easy it's a shame so the concept is excellent! really a very good idea that deserves to be developed in mobile games for example!

conk 2018-05-13 12:18

That was pretty good! I enjoyed the theme combo, as funnily enough I went with the same concept but where you went more tower defence, I went more card game. I also... didn't have time to add the tower defence part, but hey, I'm a terrible time coster.

Graphics are cute and consistent and the games feedback was very good, placing down cards felt great. The gameplay is engaging but the lack of a play button took me off guard as I was still familiarising myself with the cards and various stats when suddenly I was under attack. I guess dropping me in the deep end added a level of panic you don't usually get from tower defence games :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, and the upgrade card bug was a little annoying, but as long as you kept getting low level cards, it really didn't break the game that much.

Anyway, great job overall!
