Neat pixel art mate. :)
I'm not sure how it fits the theme -- I did find it humorous though.
@evandowning @el-pepi There is a point to the game. At the end you can see your score and if your score is too high then you see a message explaining it. The world map will show your overall low score for the level. The objective is to finish with zero.
Classic simple platformer. Not sure if the theme is there though?
To be onest the game is a bit boring at the moment. You could add some spikes and other enemies for example. I also noticed if you are going to the world map and then go back to the same level you are in, the level is restarted.
I didn't understand it until I saw that you were supposed to be getting a low score, which turns out to be quite challenging. I really liked it, and it had a nice message too. Also great graphics.
I like the idea for the theme! Found a bug that if you miss the portal at the end and keep going it starts you over. More obvious objective would be nice. Enemy was a little boring, I wish it would have been altered to fit the theme better. More interactive elements on the map would have helped spice it up.
Hard to fight the instinct to collect the coins!
A simple platformer, I liked the theme of it, even though I couldn't quite see the Jam theme in there. Keep up the good work!
Welp, turns out I'm a huge coin thief. Just kidding, but avoiding coins is actually much harder than collecting them. Nice twist of classic platformer game! :)
It's not apparent that coins are bad. But I guess that's the point, you have to wait til you finish the game to see your fate.
Collected all the coins in order to get this game worse at me. Nope, it's just the ending. Which is neat but very simple idea. Would be nice if coin collecting had an instant impact on the game's difficulty. And some fun items along the road. And you need the sound! Man, sometimes the sound does it all...
This was a fun game! I also would have loved some sound, and more / different enemy types, and more varied levels to avoid repetition, but the idea was great and I like the twist on coins being bad.
Hmm...strange idea )
I love the idea of subverting the coin collection trope and converting it so something darker. I wish you would have expanded on that premise. The levels don't differ very much and with the same story at the end it feels a bit repetitive. I think that with a more involved story and a bit more variety the game could gain a lot by a little bit of polish here and there.
The graphics are simple yet adequate. One remark about the animation: Two-frame walking animations are tough to get right. Adding a third frame helps trick the eye that the animation is smoother than just back and forth. For 2-frame animation, this tutorial explains how to pull it off well (archived): https://web.archive.org/web/20111128203610/http://www.manningkrull.com:80/pixel_art/tutorials/walking.asp
Audio-wise, I'm not sure how tight your time budget was but for a game like this, sound effects are very important. If you play around with bfxr, you will quickly find a few sounds that match the most important actions (jump, coin, squish enemy). Depending on your framework, it may not take more than an hour to select, save and add the sound effects and it will do wonders with your game feel.
The controls are good but may also benefit from a little tuning to make them tighter.
Overall a solid jump&run that shows promise but could use a little polish and variety.
Interesting idea of avoiding the coins, but nothing bad happens if you collect them so there's not a lot of motivation to try very hard. The jump is a bit hard to control, might be because of the slow x movement and air control. Perhaps adding a mechanic that changes the game if more coins are collected. For example, making enemies harder, or you move slower. or you don't jump as high, etc. There are a number of ways you could change things up. Keep up the good work!
