That was a fun shooting game, and one heck of a roller coaster ride. My only suggestion is to add a music (something scary, and atmospheric) because I think (or would be obvious) the game is meant to be scary.
Thanks for the feedback guys! I would love to hear how far players got, i.e. which loop number you got up to.
My personal best right now is loop 16, but I'm sure there are some beastly players out there who can top that.
This game is really engaging. All of the twists and turns make for a very visceral experience and the slowdown looks great. You don't see too many 3D Ludum Dare games, and the minimalist aesthetic here works well. My only main complaint is the lack of music, which would have helped the game tremendously (especially if the music slowed down when shooting). All in all, this is a pretty good entry. Great job!
(Side note: I made it past 7 loops)
@superpokeunicorn That's a great idea! Man, I can just imagine the slow down effect on the music while everything else is slowly passing you by. Thanks for the feedback and playing!
Definitely unexpected take on the theme; I gave up playing long before I 'lost' as it was a little repetitive. I know Compo games are super tight timewise, so perhaps this is unfairly picky, but it would have been nice to see some visual variance between loops - even just a change in the background colour
The web build doesn't have any music, just this white noise. Was neat but I never felt like I was ever going to run out of power, fast clicks and it doesn't decay your energy. Could have used something more to really get that sort Rez-like feeling, maybe something going on in the background, or a better way to control yourself on the rail.
@mrnyarlathotep Thanks for the feedback and suggestion. The beginning does take a while to ramp up. There are some visual changes towards the later half of the game. What loop did you play up to before it got repetitive?
@joemag Thanks for the feedback! That's a good point, the game is a little bare at the moment.
@zchen - I think I played 8 loops or so...? the format of LD doesn't particularly favour subtlety or 'slow burners' so if I bailed earlier than I should have, then that's entirely on me!
This was actually really fun. I love how it suddenly got more adrenaline-rushing/exciting on loop 5. Great color scheme, sfx; overall, excellent work! I got to loop 6 and shot 26 (big accomplishment, I'm bad at shooting games lol).
I think this would be really good for the mobile market - people love rollercoasters. It just needs polish :D
Side note: I absolutely love how you have to shoot to trigger 'start' on the start screen. The world needs more games with interactable start screens :D
@mrnyarlathotep Thanks for the update. No, I won't say it's on you, I do think the pacing is a little bit off at the start of the game.
@angela-he Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed the increased intensity in later loops. I did have this idea in mind for the mobile market! I'm interested in exploring new and exciting ways to control a first-person shooter on a touch screen. Still a prototype for now and I'm working on another game so any future work on this idea will have to wait. Yay, I'm happy you like the start screen. It's my own lazy way to do away with a tutorial and make the main menu a bit more interesting. Thanks for playing south!
I got a highscore of 12. There seems to be a minor bug where the game kept running after I game overed, and when I went back to the main menu I got an absurdly high highscore.
Personally I really liked the atmosphere, and the small touches that you added to build that atmosphere.
The game throws you into a roller coaster without any explanation where you shoot cat masks in the darkness. Every time you complete a loop the game jarring teleports you, seemingly, back to the beginning where you repeat the loop. It starts out fairly tame but quickly descends into a hellscape, where the cat masks take on a demonic visage and the rail starts twisting wildly. I particularly liked the white noise effect, it reminded me of silent hill. I also liked how shooting slowed down the camera and you got a closeup of the cat masks. Very well done!
Anyway, it's cool to see fellow devs from SG taking part in LD. Cheers!
@jusw85 Thanks for playing and your feedback! I'm happy you liked the atmosphere and the build up. I did a few small changes every loop hoping that together they would have an effect on players. Hey! A fellow sg developer! I'm working overseas at the moment but I always look forward to going to game dev. meet ups in Singapore. Maybe I'll see you around!
Got to loop 12, shot 54.
Cool concept. I dug how activating the start button essentially functioned as a simple tutorial for the game.
I was slightly confused the first few loops, as the screen shake that happens made me think I might have died somehow. Once I saw new enemy patterns after the 3rd or 4th loop I realized it was progressing. A more prominent visual display of your loop count increasing would probably solve that issue.
The slowdown effect was pretty nice and reminded me a bit of Superhot.
Enemy design was cool. I also dug seeing the level get darker and the red glows more prominent as I made it through each loop. Overall it was a solid experience- nice job!
@xel Thanks for playing and commenting! Good catch on the start button. It's not the most effective tutorial but I didn't have much time and it helped me kill two birds with one stone. I agree about the progression of loops, it's not very obvious and the gap at the end of the loop kind of looks like a hazard. Yes I got some inspiration from Superhot!
Well Done! very atmospheric vibe to the game, was easy to understand what to do and the slow down effect was awesome! did you by any chance use unitys timescale to do that? love it
All four enemies were in basically the same place on the screen. After about 6 loops, I hadn't even moved my mouse that much and it didn't feel like anything was changing.
It was a nice little experience. Pretty fun but it became a little to repetitive too fast though it became pretty challenging which I liked. The mood and atmosphere in the game could really use some music but you still get a bit of creepy vibrations. Good work!
Very cool aesthetics, love the creepy vibe! Starts very easy but gets hard pretty quick, especially when there are two monsters in one space. Graphics are really nice, very unnerving effects and atmosphere. One solution for the sudden movement at the end of a loop would be to make a dark tunnel or something, so you can't see the hickup. It would be nice if there was something more to the gameplay to give it a bit more depth.
Overall very well done!
