The enemies should not have the same range as the player or the player should have a way of dodging enemy attacks while being able to get in attacks without taking damage. Currently, whenever you move in range of an enemy to attack, you are guaranteed to take damage. This puts the player at the mercy of rng, the only two possible ways of surviving being having good luck and hearts spawning at the right intervals or avoiding combat with enemies altogether, and getting overwhelmed. I had the bad luck of 8 enemies spawning one after another without any health packs spawning on my first run.
Other than that the game idea is pretty cool and would make a very fun survival game if the combat were better! I suggest looking into a few articles about combat design and trying to make a few more games based around combat so you can learn about the importance of damage evasion in skill based games.
Wow. This is a compo entry? I am stunned. Great graphics, audio, gameplay, everything. I don't know how you made everything yourself in just 48h, I am very impressed.
One little thing though, I didn't find how to avoid damage in combat, I always took at least one damage while fighting a skeleton.
Very nice and fun!
Thank you all for the feedback so far, I'm glad people are enjoying it!
As for the combat issue where the skeletons can land an attack on you whenever you get close enough to attack them... I wasn't too sure how to get around the issue without making the character too OP. Maybe with more time to balance the game I would have found a work around. Thanks for all your comments though, I'll definitely look into combat mechanics in more depth for my next project!
Happy Ludum Daring!
A pretty fun little game. I agree with RuinWalker that the pretty much guaranteed damage you take is something you may want to review. I was lucky to get lots of hearts and extra damage early on in the game on my second play, and beat it thanks to that.
I'd say you have a decent core mechanic here to build upon, if you continue this.
Graphics are pretty good, as were music and sound. Altogether a pretty solid entry!
Interesting project which could be improved - but I had fun playing it. I liked the mood and tenebrae aesthetic. Well done ++
Very good gameplay! Nice and fast. Good visuals. I like the idea of "falling" walls, which enlarge chamber.
It is already being said by RuinWalker, there is should be a way to avoid damage but right now it is impossible. I managed to beat the game because I got lucky getting two +dmg power ups early and towards the end I simply ran away from skeletons thanks to the chamber being so big.
Regardless of that, very nice game! Theme is spot on, sounds are very well made and the concept of a chamber that grows room by room is cool. And this is a compo entry! Congratulations and good job! ;)
Excellent entry, I loved the general idea and the audio (the music + SFX fit together very well to create an interesting atmosphere).
A more skill-based combat (if only by using an alternate sprite when the skeletons attack) would have made the gameplay even better, letting you make the game last longer without making it boring. But with the current gameplay the game is just as long as it needs to be, and well balanced too so not an issue :)
The entry is also well polished, which is pretty impressive for a compo entry! Congrats
Short but good
pretty cool
Great entry. Has a lot of the same problems as my own entry in terms of being able to attack without being attacked and know when you're being damaged. That being said, with a little tweaking you have a really good game on your hands. Well done :)
Solid game. Beat it first run, second run overwhelmed from very beginning...
A great entry, awesome atmosphere! As said before, some issues with combat, but otherwise - great work!
