Impossible

A cool game, it seemed to seriously lack construction, but besides that no complaints. The only major problem is that it runs really slow (12 fps.) Maybe I'll try it with another vm, maybe it can be fixed. The boss at the end is cool, unfortuanately you can't fight him. Still, it feels more complete and solid than a lot of old NES games I've played.

Unfortunately, the game ran at a very slow fps for my crappy machine...(Sun VM, 1.4) I've seen java games do much better than that :{ Controlling the guy was a bit awkward and sluggish, and the grenade didn't really bounce as I expected it to. The zombie sheep looked pretty cool though

Ok, I added a couple of lines to a couple of classes so now this applet is totally tweaked as far as I can make it with Java 1.1. Goto:

www.geocties.com/nonnus29/unionjack/test.htm for the applet on line.

All of the objects are created at startup and nothing goes out of reference until the game is over; so there are no garbage collector issues. Everything now depends on your browser and Java Plugin.

I had a situation this evening with Mozilla; after I had browsed alot of "graphically intensive sites" (ahem) I tried the applet and it ran at 0-5 fps, were as before on Mozilla it ran at 50 fps; maybe Mozilla wasn't freeing up resources? This also effected performance in IE 5.5, I had to restart to get the fps back up.

I ran it on a win 2000 machine (IE 5.5) at school today and the graphics flickered very badly (I'm guessing MS vm). It ran fine on a Redhat Linux with Conquerer.

Didn't rate the gameplay because the framerate on my computer with JVM 1.4 was about 5 FPS... :(
It reminded me of old NES titles! :)

Side scroller can be fun... the sheep turning into abominable snowmen was extremely weird. The evil demon sheep was cool, I was very disappointed I didn't get to interact with it.

Weird technical problems - the first time I played, the other day, it ran great, but today it's in super slo-mo. Weird.

It would REALLY help if the grenades would detonate on impact. They're useless as it is, which is sad since they're the coolest weapon.

Anyway, few theme points from me, that's pretty darn tacked on.

I wish the final monster were working. It looks cool. No construction like most of us :-(

It's a pity that java is still not easy to handle when it comes to games, so I hope your next entry will be in C.
The character graphics are nice, the sheep look as if they are about to deal out some Bruce Lee punches and the boss reminds me of Chimera in Wolfchild.
Hint for everyone: Appletviewer is usually the most stable environment on all platforms, so if this game doesn't work in your browser, give it a try.

Nice game! Really good to see that some ppl in the contest made these kind of games 'cos they are fun. Also nice anims of the main character. Sad that you didn't have time to finnish it :(
Also, is performs quite poorly. Are you using the standard Graphics.drawImage to draw all stuff? It's darn slow.
The game was almost impossible to play on a 500mhz, but at a 1530mhz it ran at a normaly decent speed.

A java side scroller... will wonders never cease. To bad the destruction doesn't work. The sheep tricked me into thinking they were nice at first.

Sorry for the low Gameplay Innovation score, but it's a simple platformer. That doesn't mean it wasn't good though; tried and tested ideas are often the best! It's a nice looking game, with potential. I like the grenades! The graphics are good, and the idea of building the final weapon as you go along is nice. The implementation is solid (there was some unfortunate console output but the game carried on playing seamlessly, which is not to be sniffed at). The fun factor would increase if there were a greater variety of things to do, enemies to kill, etc. I'd like to see this game finished :-)

This is my third favorite game of the competition. I really like action side scrollers. It ran well for me ~20 fps on my junky machine. I do have Java 1.4 however. For kicks, I have been poking around at your code to help me make an AWT Applet version of my entry.

I would make up your own character next time. You don't want lawyers to attack.

Overall - 4 - I rate heavily on fun factor
Gameplay Innovation - 3 - Nothing new, but nothing broken
Fun - 4 - It is fun. I wish you had time to finish the Boss.
Graphics - 4 - Union jack is very well animated. The environment could use some work, but that is to be expected for a 48 hour game.
Sound - N/A - Don't think it has any.
Technical - 3 - Nothing earthshattering but appears to be solid.
Gameplay Theme - 3 - Just like most of the entries (including mine) lots of destruction of enemies but no real construction
Cosmetic Theme - 4 - You have sheep and they are more than just wallpaper.
Completeness - 3 - The main engine works, but there is still lots to do
