LD51 — Every 10 seconds

Ten Seconds Again by khaotom 2022-10-05T16:10:05Z

A good time! I really liked the core gameplay loop, and I liked the way risk and reward were implemented into almost every aspect of the game. The art is simple but good, and the visual design is very clear and readable. I loved the music, I can't imagine it's easy to write something that'll loop that many times without it becoming repetitive, but this game does a great job.

I only have two real problems with it: firstly, I may just have not understood how they work, but the purple power-ups felt a little pointless since they kill so few enemies and don't have any of the risk and reward elements the rest of the game is so good at. The other thing is that I think it could use to be harder overall, I didn't even realize there was a fail state until like level 100, and at higher levels the risk and reward mechanics become less and less relevant because all you can do is desperately click all over the screen and use the coin attack before the end of the round to clean up the stragglers.

Overall though, I really liked it, the way the coin pickups move was fun and challenging, and I really I feel like the way the enemies moved away from where you click gave them some real personality. Great job!

Super fun, I was surprised by how few ratings it has, I hope it doesn't end up overlooked. I've actually been wanting to make a game similar to this for a while, so forgive me if I end up dumping ideas from that. I think games like BPM: Bullets per Minute and Metal Hellsinger are really cool, but to me they're missing the feeling of almost "playing the music" that you get from something like Beatsaber or even Friday Night Funkin'. I love the way the music is integrated directly into the weapon sound design, I think it addresses that problem really well. Also love the goofy dancing animations on the character and enemies. A couple suggestions, although obviously it's your game so do what you think is best for it:

-This game has the same problem I found BPM to have, where the clip size isn't conducive to playing a full melody, so that might be something to consider.

-I feel like the reloading and breaking it would really benefit from being given a melody like shooting has, especially the groove meter attack since it's already a fixed length. Also having it not deal damage on the beat (far as I could tell) felt a little strange.

Overall though, I really liked it, I can't wait to see where this project goes in the future!

Desynchronization Escape by Kalendhos 2022-10-11T14:25:52Z

Great use of the theme, and very unique! It's not common to see a concept that feels completely original, especially in a jam, but I think this one is. I will say I think the difficulty could use a little more development time, at least in my opinion the challenge should be more on planning than execution, but execution seems harder in this version with how tight the timing on the second and third sets of guards. Overall though, great game, maybe my favorite of the jam so far! I'd love to check it out again if you decide to develop it further.

A day of the priest by SayuriNyooko 2022-10-05T16:19:44Z

Fun premise, and there is some inherent fun to carrying the sheep to the altar and watching them burn, but I feel like it could use some more going on. There's no real obstacle stopping you from bringing the sheep other than a very generous timer.

@davidsheadgames Thanks for the feedback! Though I can’t make any concrete promises, we’re planning on a post-jam version, and a marathon mode like you described is one of the things we know we want to implement, so stay tuned if you’re interested.

Those ragdolls caused so much trouble that it can’t be entirely ruled out that the code contains some of Chairshot’s actual blood.

@brainloaf-studio Thanks for the kind words! A couple things in response:

-There are a couple shortcuts in the game that we decided to leave in, especially with the air dash. Your time makes me think you found one, is that the case?

-I don’t want to say anything for sure right now, but we’re planning to develop the game further with some more levels, so follow our Itch page if you’re interested!

@david-broz This is great feedback, thank you! We're planning on a post-jam version as well as a potential longer one down the line, so feedback is very much appreciated. I broadly agree with most of your criticisms, but in the interest of time I'm just going to respond to the things that we weren't already aware of.

I hadn't considered this, but I can see what you're saying about the window not being visible to small to fit into. This could be a problem of art design as much as level design, since there aren't really any size cues around it, but it's definitely something that should be addressed. We'll also add that to the list of things to try rearranging in the level though, probably something to playtest.

UI is something we know we want to overhaul, but specifically sound cues is a great idea I'm kicking myself for not thinking of earlier. I agree about the font changes.

The rocket jump is extremely jank, this we know. I suggested the idea in brainstorming and then Chairshot had very limited time to implement it despite having played like one game with rocket jumping in it because he's a better programmer than me and I was busy with the art. That part will probably be rebuilt from the ground up.

Thanks again, if you're interested to see the game improve, feel free to follow our Itch page!

📺 You Call The Shots! by Choo 2022-10-05T23:26:25Z

Great concept, although I feel like it could use a little more time in the oven. Some of the clips work really well, like the Whiplash one, the sword fight, and the James Bond one, but with some of the others, like the Matrix one, I felt like when it wanted the button press was very unclear and it lost some impact as a result. Mash to sit on the couch was hilarious though. I hope this game gets a post jam version, because it's so close to being perfect.

For Greater Good by BayLock 2022-10-11T06:05:23Z

Fun concept! The art and music are both really nice. The gameplay felt a little one-note to me though, not a whole lot of reason to play it more than once, but a solid core, and darkly comedic concept.

Paper Spirits by galaxybat 2022-10-05T16:32:44Z

This is a hard type of game to rate, because I have to decide whether to evaluate it on its own terms, or Ludum Dare's. It's not even really a game, it's just kind of an interactive program, and the adherence to the theme is incidental at best, but none of that really matters in my opinion. It's clearly exactly what it wants to be. The only criticism I have that I think is really relevant is that the way the boats sink below the surface feels a little weird, but that aside. it's gorgeous, the music works very well, I love the way you're just placed in the environment without a start screen. I'm very it made, and I'm glad I got to play it, I'm just not sure why it was made for Ludum Dare.

LD52 — Harvest

Reaper of Souls by agentparsec 2023-01-10T20:26:54Z

Really great. The music and especially sound design really force you to think about the uncomfortable position of being the thing that brings death, and the theme and gameplay fit together well.

Out Of Sight by Kizilejderha 2023-01-10T20:43:39Z

Really good! The music and art were both amazing, especially for a compo game, and the gameplay was really interesting. I like the way the harvesters are neutral elements, but helping you by killing hunters and hurting you by taking away the cover. I was gonna say it felt too hard, and then I read a comment saying you're hidden when you stay still which I didn't realize, but I now realize was in the description so that's on me. I did beat it either way. Nice job!

Hamburger Harvest by Tuomas 2023-01-10T20:21:05Z

Fun game! Graphics are very polished. It would've been nice to be able to just play continuously and have the score keep going up, but the core is so focused and polished that I can't really complain, and goofy physics are always a boost.

Sacrifice to the Harvest God by lzxh 2023-01-10T20:52:37Z

Fun concept and solid art, but it's very confusing. I read the instructions on the itch page, but villagers kept dying without it being clear why, I couldn't tell what the time number meant, and there seems to be something going on with the color of the soil but I can't tell what. Would've benefited a lot from some kind of game log.
