Maaan, that the style, grate attentions to details with this loading screen! Loved it! Sounds and controls just feels right
WOWOW! So great idea! I just love that you don't have the map localization, (only for few seconds) it's so great to use your brain to calculate where are you are! Love it! 5/5
Really takes you back to a bygone age when it was possible to not know where you were at all times! Very clever and quite challenging, and I really liked the intro and letters and stuff. Also clever to just have the player go into the red instead of just ending the game when you trash the ship.
@zevwax, are you intentionally looking for Pico-8 followers just to poach them for Tile Machine?
I think this game is kind of wonderful! I love maps, and trying to navigate around just based on what I see in the environment (and whatever internal sense of direction I have). I've occasionally been backpacking, and my favorite part is the sense of adventure traveling from point A to point B with a map that never quite gives you all the details.
Can't say I was great at navigating, and now I'm 100 dollars in debt. But by the end I was starting to get a more intuitive understanding of how the world was shaped, and could probably pay back the debt with a few more runs. I didn't read any of the hints, but things did make more sense once I figured out that the world loops.
Lots of great polish and effects, and the gear-shift-controls were quite smooth.
@mister-king man, you have to try Tile Machine. But it's off top, we're here to discuss Steam Dasher!
Look very cool
Well done! I love the tiny steamboat with its white smoke trail and glowing blue wake over the dark sea. The pixel art is great and the delivery idea is clever. Bravo, great job!
Cool design and great work on pico8 ! I Love the stack sprite boat, the sound and particles matches well the vapor mood. I just need to take less risk, I almost crash my boat on each run 😄
I really love the aesthetics and the small details (plus the SFX) that give a really immersive mood. You did well also with the throttle, the game would have been too conventional with a simple "press-to-move" design. It fits the theme more and makes it more rewarding. A nicely polished entry, congrats!
Great job, your game is amazing! I loved playing it, super cool
Love it! Feels really satisfying to drive. Very polished as well! Nice that you even added a little narrative that changes the gameplay bit as you progress.
Very nice game, especially love the graphics and sound of steam engine!
Controls take a bit of getting used to but fun game. difficult if quite high( at least for me). the steam boat animation is great.
The controls are a bit hard, but the graphics are amazing. Very good entry :D
Loved the game even though I'm in debt now due to speeding and crashing too often. 😅 The steering felt great and the steamboat felt 'alive'. Frequent map changes kept the game interesting.
There is a tradeoff: do I want to go fast, to stay safe or to not get lost?
But if you think about it, is getting lost actually a challenge or overcomplicated UI? If let's say, I draw the map on a sheet of paper really quickly, or if I take a picture with my phone and have the map always available, am I cheating? I wonder if the game would feel different if the obstacles weren't static (during given day) and slowly moved, so the player couldn't cheat or memorize everything and had to adapt.
Just sharing my thoughts, the game is awesome! 🙂
@woona I wouldn't call it cheating, as the map is always available by pressing X (though it will only show you your position if you're at a pier). My intent was to force players to find their mainly through observation, while giving them a way to know where they are if they are really lost. Also, moving obstacles is a cool idea, thanks for your comment!
Fun game, it took a bit to get oriented, bit tricky at times. The penalty for crashing the ship seems a bit insurmountable, so need to be careful!
Nice little game. Pico8 sounds a cool platform to work with.
Funny that both our games have similar choices in gameplay, we both limited map navigation to "old tech".
