I havent done a proper punchcard in a long time. After purchasing c64 and later amiga, punchcards went out of fashion.
A bit of a learning curve but after that it was fun to program your own robot!
Very fun! I think there might be something wonky with angular momentum whenever collisions happen, but it makes for a good show nonetheless. A great take on old tech, and you succeeded in teaching me things about punchcards I never paid attention to in school.
But the real reason we're here: Take on THIS!
Sweeper begin 644 data.txt M,2!,3T]+"C$P($=/5$\@,0HQ,2!455).(#$P"C$R($=/5$\@,0HR($E&($P@ M/2`R(%1(14X@1T]43R`V"C,@248@1"`\(#8@5$A%3B!'3U1/(#@*-"!34$5% M1"`R"C4@1T]43R`Q,0HV($9)4D4*-R!'3U1/(#$*."!34$5%1"`P"CD@5%52 $3B`R-0`` ` end
the game took a while to load, and I got this error: abort("both async and sync fetching of the wasm failed"). Iβm not sure if itβs an issue on my end
The punchcard mechanic looks interesting to play around it but it's confusing and a bit weird even with the manual. Some feedback I'd have is a more practical tutorial that walks the player through how to code a basic robot and let them go from there. The concept is really cool though and I like it a lot!
Needs some time to get it, but very nice idea and great feel to the game.
Nice to see another punchcard robot game, even though ours is a lot less complex π Maybe you could show the command for each number when hovering. Until I memorized, I had a lot of back and forth with the manual.
@dracco-0n I uploaded a build without compression that should prevent that error.
@william-capon Well done! I almost won, but Sweeper caught my robot in a corner and destroyed it. :-)
(Tip for others: Add a line break between "Sweeper" and "begin..." when pasting the robot code into an enemy's ENTER MANUALLY box.)
Very much respect games like this. It's fun even though I'm quite terrible at it haha. Maybe I'll come back and see if I can actually make something competent, but I keep ending up going back to making turrets that try to defend themselves π Figuring out what to do with movement logic is tricky! Seeing the bots in action, no matter how incompetent, is quite satisfying. Nice work!
I had a blast making my bot and managed to win a few rounds against all three! There was definitely a learning curve, but I really liked this one!
Heres my bot if anyone wants to fight it!
Crazy begin 644 data.txt M,2!34$5%1"`T"C$P($Q/3TL*,34@248@3#TR(%1(14X@1DE210HQ-R!,3T]+ M"C(P($E&($P],2!42$5.(%154DX@.3`*,C$@1DE210HR,B!,3T]+"C(S($E& M($P],2!42$5.(%154DX@,3@P"C(U($E&($P\/C$@5$A%3B!455).("TW-0HR 1."!&25)%"C,P($=/5$\@,3`` ` end
It was fun coding a little silly pattern for the robot and somehow it even managed to win with it. It did take a while, and I think the main reason it won was that the `LOOK` command seem to not really work when things move or turn too fast and my bot managed to cause the others to spin round very fast.
I tried to copy paste my code into the enemies but it seemed never to work and it was really strange how I could only paste into one slot, but it kept shifting.
There were some quality of life things that could be improved in the programming, I think. The text and punch card weren't aligning. Clearer indications on the error lines. Clicking a line could set focus to the input field.
I was happy to see that I could set negative speeds!
Overall I enjoyed playing, and watching the fight play out.
