I am the first :) Really good game with some amazing tracks. In fact, it's an usual top down shooter. However yours fits with the theme as well as possible. The main aesthetic is good. However respectfully I think that you can add a custom mouse pointer - the previous is a little bit annoying. I have a script which does that - if you want. I am on twitter. Thank you. I wish you the best ++

Love the beat concept. Had me tapping along the whole time. However, the graphics were pretty off on the Mac version. Congrats on the jam and keep it up :)

jomiak 2019-05-01 03:11

Scaling for the ui was a bit weird, but other than that the game was really fun. Maybe add a bit of variety to the music and the game would be a lot more fun, as the track began to get annoying after about 7 minutes. This is definitely a project you should be proud of!

rob-avery 2019-05-01 03:18

Wow! This was really fun! Once I found out I needed to be on beat, I always got really excited when the music started to building a bass.

cardinal90 2019-05-01 03:22

Great twist on a well known genre. I can't stop playing!

taqoshaq 2019-05-01 04:40

@jomiak Whoops! That's on me for not testing that out! Thanks for the heads up! Fix forthcoming.

bitzawolf 2019-05-01 04:41

I only see the download for the Mac app! Please let me know when a windows executable is available! Was looking forward to trying it!

qlqrcoisa 2019-05-01 04:44

nice!

taqoshaq 2019-05-01 04:45

@bitzawolf Should be back up now! Let me know if you have any further issues!

bitzawolf 2019-05-01 04:54

@taqoshaq thank you! Checking it out now.

bitzawolf 2019-05-01 05:05

Oh I looooove love love this game!! Absolutely adored it! The music is great! Wonderful beat! I love how the music gets louder and adds in tracks as you get a higher beat-combo going! I only wish it wasn't as punishing for dropping the beat, maybe just reduce your current beat-combo instead of dropping it to 0. The troll comments and uplifting notes were spot-on! I loved every bit of it! Thanks for making such a fun little game!

amerigo-gazaway 2019-05-01 05:08

Awesome music/rhythm game! Especially funny having DJ'd at lots of festivals and dealing with my fair share of haters/song requesters etc. Also curious, how did you get the audio to sync up? I'm assuming some sort of third party program like Wwise or Fmod? Great work!

jjjjason 2019-05-01 06:38

Really fun, love rhythm games. Super agree with Amerigo that I'd love to see a post-mortem on how you did the audio parts of the game.

mamoniem 2019-05-01 10:19

haha, I liked that soundcloud game!

taqoshaq 2019-05-01 13:46

@amerigo-gazaway @jjjjason - We actually did the audio sync manually, without third-party packages.

Basically, since we were only dealing with many different layers of music tracks, all with the same length and BPM, we didn't need to come up with a generalized solution and just needed it to work for one BPM. We relied exclusively on the audioSource.timeSamples method to keep track of where we were in the track, since the audio can get out of sync with the game clock pretty easily. Additionally, since we knew the BPM, we could keep track of at what time the previous beat was and where the next beat should be, which we compare against the player input to determine if the input was "on beat" or not.

Unfortunately this method doesn't work for WebGL (arrggghhh!) and doesn't work if you want to have a dynamic bpm or tracks with an unknown bpm.

amerigo-gazaway 2019-05-01 16:16

Wow thanks for clarifying! That's alot of work! But makes sense if the whole game is one BPM the I guess that makes things a little easier. Still though, super impressive for just 3 days. I'ma DJ composer trying to get more into game development and interactive audio so i'm super curious how all this works. Thanks again!

enjoy-the-tale 2019-05-01 16:44

Really creative game! The Innovation and audio was the best!

nandon 2019-05-02 02:02

This is good but there should be some penalty for not being on beat, because I feel like sometimes i can just spam click.

taqoshaq 2019-05-02 02:04

@nandon interesting! I thought I had worked that out! Thanks for the feedback!

ransom 2019-05-02 02:15

This is an interesting game. I've played a lot of rhythm games, like Frequency, Amplitude, Rock Band, et cetera, but I had trouble staying on beat in this one, even after syncing. I feel like the window could be a little less strict, or the penalty for missing could be less severe. It's a buzzkill to build up the track and then have it completely cut back to zero. It's a cool concept though, and has room for expansion. Maybe you could add sound effects in the key of the track, when you attack or get hit.

homero 2019-05-02 02:16

Very nice!

black-potion 2019-05-02 03:43

Rating 20!

gastricsparrow 2019-05-02 03:43

Feels great when I get it, but I couldn't always get the correct timing, even with offset adjustment. Still a great job for a jam game!

gabrielgamedev 2019-05-02 19:39

Very good idea. Although I have discovered that I suck at rhythm

euler-moises 2019-05-03 17:03

I loved a song and the gameplay (and the joke with the soundcloud is hilarious!). I just did not understand the connection with the proposed theme.

Congratulations for the game.

mrbrooms 2019-05-03 22:06

Really nice way to play but maybe too hard. You can change the range of success for clicks a bit longer or if you don't have one you can just add it :D Music and mood are good

masterproject 2019-05-04 00:32

Great game, I loved everything about it. The theme, the music, the gameplay, the game feel... Everything was awesome. My only complaint is that it doesn't have to do with the Game Jam's theme at all...

taqoshaq 2019-05-04 02:25

@euler-moises @masterproject Thanks for the feedback! Indeed, our final product ended up straying from the theme a bit! I guess if your "life" is music and keeping with the music makes it stronger, its some form of currency? Sure, I'll go with that!

miu 2019-05-04 23:13

I like the game though it's not much on theme it's nice, although it would be nice to have a tutorial at the beginning of the game

ursagames 2019-05-05 20:43

acactus 2019-05-05 23:10

Love the soundcloud aesthetic. Doesn't really fit well with the theme, but that's okay. It's a good game about MUSIC.

atmospherium 2019-05-06 17:29

Nice rhythm-shooter. I know Unity makes it difficult to do rhythmic synchronization like this, so I'm always impressed when people pull it off this well. Synchronization wasn't perfect, but I was able to get the combo meter built up all the way a few times. The layers of music coming in the more you built up your combo was a nice touch (and the music was good on its own). Good work!

sn4pi 2019-05-07 10:18

I thnik it's incredible that you made a rhythm game in only 3 days! Amazing work and difficult but cool gameplay! I like the music, it fits really well with a top-down shooter in my opinion.
