Really good, I really enjoyed it. The only part that was a little odd is I don't like the adding of paths/abilities without a reason. For example if he picked up an axe down by the breaker room I would have been more ok with breaking down the door. The only reason I gave the graphics a bit low was the darkness shading was driving me nuts. Certain things I couldn't see well when I had the flashlight on them and walls tend to go from visible to completely dark. Having said that, for a game jam completely awesome on the audio and mood.

occultone 2019-05-01 16:17

@raganvald : The flashlight you have is a solid steel maglight, the intent was that you were breaking off the door handle, but there was only so much time to make things happen at the end, sorry it wasn't communicated better. Thanks for the feedback!

Cool ! I loved it !

lakrits 2019-05-01 23:18

So spooked right now. Clever ending, pretty nice game! Even had an options menu. I had some problems with the flashlight not lighting up some stuff, for example the generator. Also a bit flickering on the walls.

A little weird to ignore the theme of Ludum but I shouldn't say anything since I did that once too. The theme was "Ancient Technology" and all we did was put a phone in the dirt in the game, otherwise it was completely unrelated. Although it did feature canons, guess that's a bit of ancient tech.

occultone 2019-05-01 23:30

@lakrits : The theme was always there to stop people from the "Blank Page Problem". I don't think Mike ever meant it to be a requirement, and we really hated this one... Rendering problems are legit, I didn't have the time I wanted to go in and really tune the lighting, playing on Ultra fixed most of my problems, but I'm not overly happy with it.

Glad you liked the ending!

Aww man is this game gonna be spooky I'm not good with spooky

edit: oh whoop it was spook (no spoilers play the game for the spook)

Pretty cool, voice acting in a LD game is pretty impressive. The dynamic lighting effects of the flashlight were pretty dope as well! The content itself is pretty standard fare for a FP-horror game, but I imagine y'all could further expand upon it in a post-game session, now with the strong framework here.

As always you've got a great feel for establishing mood. Everything felt claustrophobic and the sound and lighting really built tension. A few qualms with how often some of the dialog would retrigger, but that's absolutely a minor nit-pick for LD (especially considering the work going into fully voicing the game). Gameplay itself felt good - it was slower and more methodical than I wanted at first, but I think was absolutely the right pace for the mood you set. The gating systems were cool, water effects were cool, flashlight was cool (except for some textures not working great with my settings). Great work!

Pretty awesome entry. Scared everything out of me. Pointing the flashlight to the right direction sometimes felt hard (in the generator). The voices, noises, lights are soo spooky. Great entry!

occultone 2019-05-03 19:29

I'm thinking next time, the Flashlight needs to be in Screen Space. I wanted to do something nifty with the feeling of a simulated body in worldspace, but it sounds like the concept was a little too rough for the wild. #TheThingsWeLearn

Thanks!

firesong-bard 2019-05-06 18:24

@atmospherium, thanks for the input on the sound! I think, if I had a few more hours to tinker, I would have changed the section where the voice gives you clues to where the items for the Generator are. The 'fake jumpscare' should definately have had a 'trigger only once' rule attached to it, and the hints for the jerry can and key should have detected whether you had the items already or not. They triggered too often, and at completely random intervals. Even with as small a game as it was, it was noticable that I didn't have enough different lines for that part of the game loop.

I'll have to keep it in mind next time we do a project like this. I was psyched we got to do voice acting as a main component of this jam.

Great to see you folks again, for another Ludum Dare! That was an amazing and athmospheric experience. Some moments really gave me goosebumps. :D Had a nice Amnesia/Penumbra vibe to it. The ending was very effective! You managed to give a good characterization of your protagonists in that short time. The voice acting was was spot on and the music, sfx and graphics fit really well in the horror genre. The only problem I encountered was the flashlight position and that multiple voices were sometimes playing at the same time. Maybe I played too fast. :D Nevertheless, great job!

jam373 2019-05-06 20:21

Very cool little story, was not expecting that ending at all! Great mood made all the better by the voiceover work!

enderswype 2019-05-07 06:24

"fail to load mono" couldn't play the game and rate you, sorry

lubaka 2019-05-07 11:40

Error.png

Seems like i can't run the game for some reason, sorry :/

occultone 2019-05-07 15:20

@lubaka @enderswype : We havn't made any changes. What version did you try and load?

enderswype 2019-05-07 15:28

i downloaded this file : SHELTER_Windows_x64.zip and yes, same error as @lubaka

atmospherium 2019-05-07 15:28

@enderswype, @lubaka, @occultone Errors like that can pop up if the location you extract the ZIP to has too long of a file path. Try creating a directory higher up the hierarchy (i.e. C:/LD44/Shelter) and it should stop throwing the error.

xkyl 2019-05-07 16:37

Awesome Game.

lubaka 2019-05-07 18:04

@atmospherium The folder i put the game in does not have a long path, its basically GameJam games/Shelter, so its not that, atleast in my case.

jjjjason 2019-05-07 18:06

One more rating to go come on y’all!!

Coming back to say I don’t think I gave this game its due prior. Having played way more LD games since the mood in this is pretty strong! Also if you think about it, your life being currency feels like the theme of many survival horror type games haha.

mika-la-grand 2019-05-07 20:12

Instructions

The 64x version doesn't work, use wasd to move, e to interact and f to turn on the flashlight (yes I tried pretty much every key on my keyboard), pick up the flashlight before picking up the walkie talkie (thank me later). You should now also have 20 ratings.

occultone 2019-05-07 20:27

Hmmm, looks like the build is actually inside of the Folder. Might have mangled the Archive when I made it. I can clean that up and reupload it.

occultone 2019-05-07 20:30

@mika-la-grand , @lubaka , @enderswype :I've reuploaded the x64 Archive. Thanks for helping troubleshoot!
