Didn't really understand what the winning conditions were. I tried shooting planes and it didn't seem to do anything. Cool idea, just wish it had better execution.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD40 → Sleepy Fighter Pilot

Thanks for the feed back. I thought it might play as an endless runner. Kind of see how long you can go with out dieing kind of thing. It is rough, I know. I'm still surprised I actually made it in on time. Thanks again.
I like how you used the theme lol, definitely fits! Fun game!
Neat game! Interesting concept for an endless running - it seemed like I was able to spam e and not have any collision with the objects? Great job!
Putting a cool down on the E button was the last thing I wanted to do but ran out of time. I just figured oh well. I did not, however, it would cause you to clip through other objects though. Thanks for the heads up.
One thing I didn't like was sometimes it felt like planes came out of nowhere from the left of the screen, even when I didn't drink much coffee. It felt like they would hit me (or otherwise bug out) faster than I could even react.
Yeah I had the enemies track the x value of the player and didn't compensate for how fast the player could turn left and right. As a result the enemies would sometimes catch up to your z value and then slowly start to drift towards your x. Since they were already parallel along the z axis they seem to pop up out of nowhere, from the left or right. I might go back and put a fix in for that.
Thanks for the feed back!
Nice mechanics and idea! There is potential here. If you could see the planes and hills coming from a little bit farther away, that would be great, since you would have more time to maneuver and shoot.
Thanks for the feedback. I have been thinking about going back in and tweaking some things and of course fixing some of the more atrocious bugs.
Concept is good. Sometimes I can't see incomming planes and they just stick on my front :)
Thanks for the feed back @chemOpren. I'm working on fixing that as well as maybe spoofing up the game play a little.
An unexpected way and amusing to interpret the theme! The gameplay simply works, but could be extended. At least by giving some visual feedback when you're firing and shooting down other planes (explosiooons!) Maybe the shaking could be worse, but calm down if you stop drinking for some time.
Graphics are good and coherent, because MSPAINT. I don't need much more! I like the fact that some objects (hills) pops up some times. It makes the generated world far more believable, even if its highly stylized. Maybe you could had more landscape things?
I liked it overall, great work ;)
Thank you so much @diffy for the thoughtful feed back. I'm currently working on a post LD40 version that should address your suggestions. I had a great time playing around with the games perspective and I know it would only help by having some more visuals to complete the effect.
Thanks again.
Try again next time! I ended up spamming the spacebar to get past the one minute mark. Would love to be able to point! Audio went well with the graphics, reminded me of Top Gun for the NES.
The graphics are very simple but for some reason I kinda enjoyed them. I like the concept and it was very fun to play for a few minutes. I would like to see some more content or objectives but overall it was very good! I had a very bugs were the enemy planes were just spazzing on my cockpit but other than that I really liked it!
Pretty interesting idea!
I really like the way you turn a 2D game into a "not so fake" 3D game lol by manipulating the Z axis. However I fail to realize the theme in this game, what more and what worse? I think you should improve the feedback of the game (when you hit a plane, when it hit you, when you drink coffee, etc...) And you should give it an end since I don't know when the game will end. Anw nice try. Check out our game in my profile.
I really liked graphics and style! Your best ms paint artist did a great job, I think I'd play other games in this style. Concept is fun, and main downer for me was the shooting part — I was never sure if I hit enemy or not when I shot. Thank you for making your game!
The theme is not really important here, you can just spam the e and never lose. If you dont shoot the enemy planes you dont lose eithrt, the planes just stack up on your view.
Some feedback when shooting would be nice, like, you know, bullets. Otherwise kinda fun game, but it need some polishing.
@illabom @sbarrio @mainghia95 @felegz @dawik9000
Thank you all for the feed back. I did have a much more flushed out idea in mind when I set out to nail down this premise. Obviously I feel quite short. As for the theme, the idea was the more coffee you drank the hard it would be to shoot down the enemies. That was a bit of a fail as well. Since the gun uses a hit scan and the reticle is mounted to the players view, no matter how shaky the screen gets it's always a breeze shooting the enemies down.
These faults aside I had a blast working on it and I can't wait for the next LD.
I have been playing around with the idea of going back after LD40 ends and fixing the bugs and finalizing and polishing 'Sleepy Fighter Pilot' but I don't know.
Thanks again to everyone for the feed back.
The concept is nice, with good humour to boot ^^, there are some issues however.
There's a lack of feedback info when you shoot, it would be nice to have some effects maybe at least on the enemy planes to indicate they are hit, the speed may be a bit too high as avoiding mountains can be tricky when you have just a split second to do so.
Issues aside, i felt the core concept was indeed solid and with tweaks and polish could make some pretty fun game, and quite frankly the graphics are nice and cohesive for MS Paint ;)
so congrats mr best ms pain artist :p
That you so much for the feed back @nokusu. Ad hoc art assets aside, I did have fun playing with the concept. I do need to go back in and smooth out the very rough edges. As well, there are somethings just flat out missing from the game. I am curious about the perspective though and would like to make something using this fake 3D motion that's a little bit more worth the players time.
Thank you all for the feed back. If I do get around to messing with this again I will take everyone's suggestions on board.
The simple graphics work surprisingly well, and the coffee mechanic is neat, but the flying and shooting, the meat of the game, are not all that great.
That's a very fare assessment. It was one of the more significant short comings of this LD for me, not finishing the core concept of the game. I will be going back in and finishing up the project once LD40 wraps up.
Thanks for the feed back.
