| Dec 15 00:53:00 | Carol and the Beanstalk | I beat it! Everyone else has pretty much already said my thoughts, but to add on:

Pros:
-Nice animations and particles, I love the beanstalk growing
-Good-looking backgrounds
Cons:
-The text at the start blended into the background too much

Good job! | |
| Dec 15 01:04:00 | 11m 00s | PISTIL PISTOL: BOTANY BLAST II | Tons of fun, although I didn't understand how the level progression worked until the third level. (Other players: the more green things you collect, the bigger the portal gets. As you get hit the portal gets smaller. Once the portal is full, you move on to the next level.)

As I said in the IRC, the screen flash is awesome. Felt great to shoot, and the escalating music made the game extra exciting. Controls were very interesting and fun to use. Good job! |
| Dec 15 01:09:00 | 5m 00s | Hanami - Push-Up Farming | Really funny, loved the graphics and sound. I wish the bars were lower on the screen so I could see them do their push-ups.

As a side note, I think this game would be even better if the push-ups were to the beat, like a rhythm game. |
| Dec 17 21:51:00 | 68h 42m | Hard Decisions | Played the post-compo version, since the only difference is the stats at the end. However, the stats said I chose to allow teenagers to be recruited, even though that's not what I said.

As for the rest of the game, I liked the tone of the game, and the choices were all well-written. The graphics fit the game well, and the flashing towards the end was a nice touch. It could be even better with some ambience and button noises, though. |
| Dec 17 22:23:00 | 32m 00s | Slate | Nice game! I really like the sound and graphics, screen-shaking is always fun. The gameplay is great too, good use of the theme. Once I get a DDR pad I'd love to replay the game with it.

I really like the health/rampage system, but I'd like it better if I could choose when to activate it; pressing both buttons at the same time could be used to keep the theme. Another problem with rampage is that some of my button mashing will be added to whatever enemy I'm facing when rampage ends. This usually leads to me getting hurt or dying.

As a side note, I noticed that the game and the screenshots had different arrows, and the comments that were already here were complaining about them not being distinct enough. It seems to me like you changed them after release to be bigger. I didn't take off any points for it, and I don't have any proof, but I just thought I'd let you know that's against the rules. Check out the FAQ at the bottom of the page or the full rules here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/rules/ |
| Dec 17 22:41:00 | 18m 00s | The Gun that Makes Things Bigger | Really cool concept! A full game of this would be fantastic. I also loved the spin on the "two-button controls" theme, I thought of it too, but I couldn't find a way to implement it. Putting it on a poster was really simple execution that worked wonders; great job!

Even after figuring out what to do on the final puzzle, I was still stuck for a while because of the short timer and the very small area where you can hit the mirror.

Some more sounds would have been nice, but the music was good. Good graphics, too. |
| Dec 17 23:17:00 | 36m 00s | SUPER SCIENCE CORP | Upon first running the game, fullscreen was completely broken for me. My mouse had to be in strange areas to click buttons, so I could barely make it through the menus. Luckily Alt-Enter puts it into windowed mode. My monitors are 1366x768 and 1280x1024, if that means anything to you. It started on my second screen instead of my primary, and it didn't function on either screen.

Once I was able to start the game, I would frequently stop being able to move, the hand cannon shots would stay still instead of moving (although I could use the broom to sweep them towards enemies), or the hand cannon would stop working altogether. Once I got to level 3, I died to these glitches and an enemy that wouldn't die no matter how many times I hit it (I even used the sweeping laser thing from earlier to get around 20 hits on it at once). After I died I got a voice clip, but there was no way to reset, and it just stayed on the same screen. Restarting the game brought me all the way back to level 1, so I stopped playing.

Bad experience aside (it seems like everyone else was able to play the game just fine), the graphics and audio were both great. The ambience was good, and the voice acting was funny. Good use of both themes, for reasons you already know I like the 'hitting enemies makes them bigger' idea.

It's clear a lot of work was put into the game, but it stinks that I had so many problems trying to play it. If I get my new computer before the end of the rating period, I'll redo my review. For now, I've left fun and innovation out of my ratings. |
| Jan 4 21:23:00 | 430h 06m | Cideogen | The growing weapon was funny the whole way through, and it worked with the goofy mood presented with the graphics, music, and story.

The gameplay was short and not very entertaining. Not much to say there that others haven't already said. |
| Jan 4 22:45:00 | 1h 22m | Temple of the Anonymous Evil Elder God | Just played through the whole game and took notes. Normally I take my notes and rewrite them, but I have lots of notes and not much time left before judging is over. Here you go, unfiltered notes (in order):

Would be easier to follow dialogue if characters were marked by portraits or differently colored names

Very annoying battle music

It only asks you if you want to travel to a location once, better if there was just a sign

Interesting story, great use of theme

Funny item names, liked rusty wooden fork especially

Should say how many materials you need for things

Liked having a healer in the forest

Should automatically heal after every battle, going back to the npc was tedious

"I am the conductor of the poop train!"

Liked having the enemies on the map instead of random encounters, but wish there was a way to spawn in more at any time for grinding reasons

What kind of name is Owel

Should notify you when you get a new skill

The slimes are so happy :D

Like the differences of skills

Walking through the forest maze and back is very irritating

Don't understand the differences between blunt, piercing, and slashing weapons; I could find out on my own, but an explanation would've been nice

Would love some boss music, even if it was just a slightly different version of the main battle theme

Healing potions restore tons of health, thank you!

This axe does way more damage than my spoon; I guess that's to be expected, but holy crap

= Beat the slime boss with full wood equipment and axe

Excaliborg? But I only just got this axe!

...it doubles my current attack? Oh no.

= Beat the cruel ember, he didn't stand a chance.

The new party member's name makes me think of tacos

Hailstorm OP

I like the arrows on the doors, I would've gone wandering into every wall if it weren't for them

Just noticed the background for the inside of the volcano is the outside of a volcano

These battles are getting very annoying, not sure if I'm too strong

The game says I have 30 minutes of playtime now, that's long for a LD game

Picked up a lava bucket to the far-left (the one guarded by a fire) and now I cant move

My last save was at the start of the volcano, this time through I'll go straight to the boss instead of fighting every enemy

The only battles that take more than 1 turn are the ones with fire slimes. Those take 2.

There isn't even a boss here, just a bunch of lava buckets

= Got the lava buckets at the end of the volcano

I wish I had an escape rope like in Pokemon

= Entered the temple

There's the weapon description I wanted earlier

Hailstorm is now completely useless, thank goodness

Vengeful blizzard is ridiculous, but at least it costs mana

I have a lot of mana

Exploited the healer, everything is free now. There's weirdly no big punishment for doing this... does this alter the ending or something?

= Beat the second slime boss in 3 turns

Hahaha, that ending. I've seen it done before, but it completely caught me off guard anyway. I expect there's a 3rd ending somewhere, but I won't get around to that until after the rating is over. Good game! |
| Jan 4 22:56:00 | 11m 00s | The Cube of Zanigriv | Hahaha, you've already said a lot of what I was going to say in your description. Thanks for the info on how to play, it explained the game very well.

The art is fantastic, I especially loved the shadows behind the enemies and the colors. Good job with the interface, it made sense (after the instructions, of course) and was easy to see.

The gameplay was interesting at first, but got stale after a little while. I'd love to see an updated version of the game with more content, and more of a difficulty curve. One of the other comments said it would work well on mobile devices, and I completely agree. If it was done right, infinite waves and an online leaderboard could make this game even better. |
| Jan 4 23:00:00 | 4m 00s | Arc | This game is super simple and loads of fun. If it was on mobile devices, I'd play it all the time.

The music fit very well, and the use of the growing theme was also very creative. Two-button controls could have been added easily, but I think it's better that you didn't include that theme. |
| Jan 4 23:05:00 | 5m 00s | ZZXXX the Gremlin | Same problem as Linear. I haven't used Game Maker Studio, but if I recall correctly, isn't there a way to export the game for browsers? If so, it might be worth a try. |
| Jan 4 23:23:00 | 18m 00s | LEVEL UP! | Fun and simple! Loved the graphics, especially the background and screen-shakes. However, the power-ups seemed inconsistent with the rest of the graphics; they had too many colors compared to everything else. Great use of both themes (assuming the leveling up is 'growing'). I was going to complain about the game becoming too easy once you had enough levels, but then I reached hardcore mode. Well played. |
| Jan 4 23:48:00 | 25m 00s | Edo Arena | Easily my favorite game so far. Graphics were very simple but lots of fun, I liked the low-poly models, smooth animations, and particle effects. The audio isn't anything spectacular, but it does add to the game. The gameplay has plenty of content, and I always love upgrade systems, especially ones where you can see the progress being made. Combo system was lots of fun, especially when I got a x128 combo. That made the game a lot shorter, hahaha. |
| Jan 5 01:09:00 | 1h 21m | EarthWard | The graphics were all well-made and kept to a good style, and the music complemented its style very well. I found it interesting how you were able to get more use out of the fuel bar by making the end darker, nice idea. The only complaint I have about the graphics (although it's very minor) is how choppy the intro cutscene is compared to the rest of the game.

The controls worked very well and made good use of the theme. The enemies were interesting, especially how the shielded one could reflect shots back at the Earth. I would have liked to have an on-screen health bar for the Earth, since everything else was already there to see. I'm not sure why you chose to make a fuel bar at all, if you lose all your fuel it's incredibly hard to get it back, so you basically have to restart. |
| Jan 5 01:16:00 | 7m 00s | Another Dragon | Loved the graphics, especially the little details like the screen effects, enemies being squished by the boulders, and spears staying in the dragon. The sound effects were great, and for some reason I didn't mind the lack of music, not even noticing until I started typing this.

I haven't played Another World (unlike every other commenter here, haha), but I enjoyed it anyway. Good job! |
| Jan 5 01:22:00 | 6m 00s | Never Ending Balloon Bank | The controls were odd at first, but I got used to them quickly. Would be better if you could do something with the money, like upgrade your pin shooting or make more balloons spawn. Not being able to lose made the game less entertaining, and I found myself stopping relatively quickly.

Good use of both themes, though. I always love it when a game is able to use both in a noticeable way. |
| Jan 5 01:29:00 | 7m 00s | Snake | Whenever I opened it, it crashed immediately afterwards (Windows 7, 64-bit). Are there anything I need to install to get it running? I'm on a new computer, so that may be the problem. |
| Jan 5 01:41:00 | 12m 00s | Desperate Vessel | The arrow in the background was super helpful whenever I fell off screen, that was a very good idea. The controls were strange at first (especially because I hadn't looked at the game description, haha), but I was able to get used to them, and found them to be original and interesting. Sounds/music and a more noticeable change in difficulty would make this game a lot funner. Your explanation for the growing theme is a bit of a stretch to me, but the 2-button control is still fine.

Also, the retry button worked fine for me. |
| Jan 5 01:50:00 | 9m 00s | Rolla Grolla Arena | First off, I didn't play with anyone else. Kind of hypocritical considering I also made a 4-player brawler, but whatever. I'll try to rate fairly, and won't mess with the fun category!

Very interesting idea gameplay wise. The controls were well done, I like how you solved the jumping and moving problem. Better than what I came up with, hahaha. As said before, the music loop is awful. The sound effects are nice though. |
