LD55 — Summoning

Shape Defender by bzoo345 2024-04-19T19:51:03Z

This was a decent survival shooter. First run through I couldn't figure out how to get the lenses to work, had to reread the rules to see that I had to press 1,2,3 but after getting them to work they didn't seem that useful because of the debuff to damage hitting enemies of different colors. If there were a way of improving the usefulness of the lenses that would be good

Decent card game, execution worked I think. Could potentially find better ways of showing information to the players before they click on stuff, but otherwise I think the information was delivered well. Once I'd gotten going I wasn't confused as to what I was doing. Some of the features seemed unnecessary, but that isn't necessarily a problem

Overall I liked the concept of this game, it was well timed and the pieces worked as expected on the board.

The summoning circle was very difficult to get working and wasn't explained in the game well, but I liked the concept of adding a second task that had to be micromanaged along with the board.

I couldn't figure out which pieces could combine if any. And there were a few spots where it forced you into making a decision where it would have been nice to be able to back out, although that could intentional as a rule of chess is often where you touch a piece and have to move it

One thing that I would recommend improving is the amount of arbitrary waiting in the game. I like the type effect for dialog, but it took a long time to be fully typed in and then the ingredients were added to your list. If those could have been done together the player wouldn't be waiting too long before getting started

The art and sound was very atmospheric, definitely fit the theme, and this is a really good start to a more fully fleshed out cooking game design, add in a few minigames or drawing out some designs and a couple extra reasons to switch back and forth between the top and bottom screens and you've got a decent game
