LD56 — Tiny Creatures

Finders, Creatures by ShadowMitia 2024-10-08T11:32:11Z

A progress bar for scanning as feedback would go a long way. The game runs and controls well enough, and I can tell what you're going for. The music ran out before I was able to find half of them, and then I walked off the map intentionally but I didn't know what I expected lol

@co5monaut Yeah, I definitely wanted to try and do some shader stuff to spiff the game up beyond "it's just shapes", like Geometry Wars or something retro-graphics inspired, but I simply didn't have the time to do it. Kind of a shame because I did a bit of preparation looking at Raylib shaders and have a bit of shader-writing background, but that's how it goes.

@royur Yes, that's the end. It's taking a bunch of people by surprise, so sorry about that. I definitely should have made that more clear.

There is also an invisible exit where there was one in the last game, and you can take the boids down it and crash the game, if you want a super secret ending, I suppose.

@hotdog I use firefox, so I'm not sure how to help you. If you can look at any errors in console, I might be able to figure it out.

@marknormington So interestingly, the blue and the green boids don't influence each other's flight at all. If you have pretty even numbers flying together, you'll actually see them "wave" or "oscillate" as two groups while flying in separation.

This was done entirely for the blue/green coded level, since otherwise some of the blues would want to stay with some of the lagging greens because of flocking as the other color hits the wall and stays behind. But it does have the effect of making the flock less strong. It could have been cool to explore more of the flocking parameters/mechanics, but just didn't have the ideas or time, so it's cool at least a little ended up in there.

And yeah, the blue/green contrast is not great and wasn't particularly well thought out. I kind of like how they look at least a little bit similar, but I would have liked to do some kind of effects to make them look more independent. Maybe I could have given some outlines.

Like the others said, this is a really good execution of a puzzle platformer. If you ever wanted to make a game for the NES or Gameboy, this could make a really good homebrew for one of those.

I do think I might have softlocked myself about 10 or so levels in, when one of the Taras fell into the deep pit on the right, unless I'm missing something. A reset-level button would be nice if that's a 'loss'.

Tara by sbeif 2024-10-08T12:09:01Z

@sbeif ah, I didn't lose there, and I didn't see it in the instructions, so I assumed it wasn't there. I should have tried it though!

Bug Bash by ZuhairGhias 2024-10-08T11:42:29Z

This is a really complete submission which I appreciate a lot. The theme/graphics/gameplay all complement each other nicely, and there is some interesting design here for a tower defense game I haven't seen before. One of the better games I've played so far.

Enjoyable game with a funky mood

Rat Dead Redemption by GreenPig 2024-10-08T10:27:32Z

Gives a feeling of running around as a rat, has a nice little mood

Camouflage Garage by Hammy0212 2024-10-08T12:08:14Z

The audio design of hearing the radio pass around you as you sling by is crazy, and this game looks incredible and is fun too. Extremely high quality product. The screenspace effects and sounds are soo good

B.E.E - Brave Explorer Evangeline by Pentaworks 2024-10-08T10:35:36Z

Fun little thematic game. IDK if Unity offers mousegrab, but I assume it does, and that might make using the mouse as one of the inputs easier. I didn't have too much trouble with WASD+arrow keys though. I liked how I had to fly up the bell shaped flowers to get the pollen and the menu sound effects.

SMOL BIZNASS by CO5MONAUT 2024-10-08T11:51:34Z

I thought this game was really funny. I'm not sure if getting 5+5=10/ten is supposed to be wrong. The overall mood/humor is outstanding for a gamejam game. At first I was thinking it had nothing to do with the theme, but I was wrong, and had a lot of fun snatching stuff from the little guys.

One thing: audio cue at the end when you win turned out to be way too loud/unpleasant.

One day by BOHNE 2024-10-08T11:23:44Z

Too bad this guy did that too himself after I worked hard enough to get 45 coins for a full inventory of oranges. I think his ghost was sad when he saw me walking back from the store.

Oh, and yes, WASD constrols would be very nice to have.
