LD46 — Keep it alive

Guns are Gas are Life are Score by Josh Riley 2020-05-03T22:54:22Z

Very nice. Usually I hate games with this control scheme of "point and accelerate" (except for space simulators), but something about this game makes it work. The controls are surprisingly nimble and accurate, unlike many others which I have trouble using. I found these elements that make it exceptional in this game:

* Camera zoom relative to speed, which gives ample reaction time and one cue of current velocity * Path trace with "timing dots", another cue of current velocity, plus one cue for acceleration * Pointy shape of player, an excellent cue for current acceleration * Target marker, which removes headache of navigating in void

So yeah, this game might not be the most innovative one, but its controls are really well done. Heck, I can even employ energy-fighting tactics! Simple, but well polished.

Pretty good game. Though it would be much better if rooms can be removed, because ants dig tunnels randomly. Or perhaps have the queen prioritize staying at the deepest room?

@alex-davies Agreed. It would be fun to incorporate _some_ level of probability contest by allowing a few obstacles in a row (so the player think ahead in terms of permutations), but as the options are very limited, there needs to be some logic checking whether the player can at all progress, or this becomes a game of chance.

However, I do think allowing 100% death 2 hops out is acceptable, given the screen size, as that may actually put some depth in strategies.

This is pretty nice. It would be much better if the controls are polished a bit more.

@cobear25 It is fine to use the "rubber band" mechanics. I am talking about my own viewpoint here, so please judge by yourself.

It was very frustrating at first, but practising made it less so -- but still somewhat frustrating. Two greatest points: aimed correctly, but not enough range, and missing by just a tiny bit. Both of these were "so close", but provided no positive feedback because 1) I cannot refine my firing solution due to the need to reset my mouse cursor to the PC and 2) the trajectory of star is not changed, so I have to aim from scratch again. For me, there would be 3 things that may make this game much better.

First, increase the range! I have to pull all the way across the screen to hit halfway the other side. Heck, I have to pull _outside_ the window sometimes. Second improvement would be a "magnet" or "sticky" grabber. If you miss by a little, you can either get it anyway (reducing difficulty outright and might not be what you want) or pull the star's trajectory towards you (rewards by extending the aiming window and allowing a more refined second shot). Third and probably least important, is some kind of aiming aid. A dashed line projecting the grabber should be pretty good.

No, you cannot do anything except for bugfixes. New features like this cannot be added... for judging anyways. No one would look at your `development` branch, probably.

Yes, slow animation is exactly expected. You should have just enough HP to get to the end. use defend sparingly and just charge, and you should die right before the end.

It took me about 10 tries to win this, and I am the dev :smirk:

I don't know what's happening with the null problem... I tested with my machine and a few others with Firefox, Chrome, and on x64 Linux/Windows. Try downloading the executable version

Thank you @lmb. Glad you recognized (perhaps subconsciously) the Dorian scale I used for music .

Interesting. You should not win by just charging... You should technically die just before. But perhaps that is just due to start timing...

Very well executed game with complete art, sound, and mechanics. I would wish the souls don't go away that quickly, otherwise the master cannot be satisfied!
