LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Expendabots by dalbinblue 2018-12-31T22:11:25Z

Very impressive entry! Mechanics are rich, puzzles are challenging. Some of the levels are quite tedious because you have to repeat the same task so many times. It could be that the chosen mechanics naturally lead to these kinds of puzzles, but I definitely think more compact levels would be great if possible. That said, I still enjoyed the game a lot :)

@maytch thanks! Was it the web version you were playing? The web emulator might run slowly for some people, which would lead to crackling audio because the GBA music playback is tied to the FPS.

@jesus-gonzalez sorry to hear that the game crashed. We tested on hardware, I promise! Out of interest, which flashcart were you using?

Thanks a bunch for the warm words everyone <3

Very fun entry! Cool mechanics, easy to pick up, wonderful music and art. I played through it twice but both times I resorted to just guiding a single small group. Maybe the game could benefit from some elements that force you to - or reward you for - splitting up the group?

Holy crap, this is really well designed!! Accessible, easy to pick up yet deep and hard to master. I really want to grab a pack of cards and try it with my family when I next see them. Also the music is a bop <3

This was fun! I'm a sucker for "rising lava" type challenges. The concept was amusing and the variety in character designs was a nice touch. I think the controls could be improved with some common platformer techniques such as input buffering and coyote time.

I didn't find it too difficult at all, cleared it on my first try with the laser over 300m away.

Music was nice, sfx didn't really go well with it (maybe I've just heard too many jam games using sfxr/bfxr)

I tried doing a pacifist run but it doesn't seem to be possible because the player hitbox is fat and some people spawn very close to the edge of the platforms. Even when I was trying to avoid people I still killed about 40 on my way up :')

Wow I really like this concept! You shouldn't be so hard on yourselves, you have something really original here, I think it is just a few tweaks away from being a top-tier entry

- the enemies are very hard to hit - the first enemy you encounter should be much easier to hit - maybe you could crouch in order to shoot lower? - or maybe the mouse could be used to aim 360 degrees?

- the game mechanics need more communication, e.g. - as you move, you see particles floating away from you, to signify that you are losing health - when you are near death, you may see some extra filter or overlay/effect - when you kill an enemy, the enemy drops particles which fly towards the player. This way you see the character being visibly 'healed'. - when you reach full health, your character sparkles or glows or something - audio can help a lot here too (accompanying sfx for all 4 of the above points)

Besides that, I think the game could benefit from some kind of tutorial section, maybe some more focused level design to ensure that the player understands each concept. And of course music could be a great addition.

But yeah, overall I enjoyed it and think what you have is really promising. I don't think there is anything fundamentally 'not fun' about it, it just needs some changes.
