LD54 — Limited Space

MemGuard Tower Defence by Zaphire 2023-10-03T08:51:54Z

Cool concept, and very nicely polished!

It took me a while to understand how "memory" worked, I think it's a bit unintuitive as a resource. The fact that enemies making it through will steal memory quickly turns the game into a death spiral, because all your turrets power off, leaving you defenseless. It would probably be better to decouple HP and memory.

One mishap was right clicking the central power station, which disconnected *everything* and left me completely vulnerable.

That said, it's a very fun experience, I like the different tower types! The long-range ones often miss or hit friendly structures, but still cool effects when they do hit :)

This game probably has a lot of potential, but I didn't manage to find out how it works (web version). The tech tree is blank without symbols, the UI is not very intuitive and the sea level rises so quickly that there is no time to do anything. It's too bad, from the description it looks like a really cool game, would love to play it if there's a balancing/fixing patch :)

Very chill and uplifting experience. Cool take on the "limited space". The idea that different buildings consume different resources (e.g. radio tower needs power, but flowers need water) is a really cool way to trade off available limits. It could probably have been a bit more challenging, I had lots of space left over in the end.

What was a bit finicky was the placement; the collision radiuses never matched the 3D models, so it was always guesswork. Maybe draw a debug circle around each object, or use something like tiles/hex tiles to make it more obvious.

The one soundtrack with the synth and piano is incredibly beautiful and contributes a lot to the mood. Did you make it yourself? Does it have a name?

@matt-barnfield thanks for the response! I think the audio should definitely be published somewhere separately, of course if you guys want that :)

I meant the very first song, starting with piano and then synth -- so probably "Breathe". It's always amazing to find such gems in unexpected places like game jams.

Nice game, I like the art style! Overall good mechanic to see getting less and less space over time. The arrow feel a little bit underpowered, since they cost a lot of resources and have very short range, so you can barely protect a temple. All in all cool idea!

Beautiful art style and nice story! A lot of love went into it.

However, the light flashing on/off was quite a deterrent (is that intended?) and the walking back and forth felt a bit tedious after a while. Could have used a tiny bit more depth/puzzling, but overall definitely great achievement in a game jam :)

Fun game, and very cool take on the "limited space" theme. It was truly daunting to see literal space being taken away from you.

I think you could have been a bit more generous with power-ups, the basic pistol is far too weak for later waves, and shotguns/2nd pistol last very short. Also, I misstepped a few times and fell to my death -- but maybe some time penalty (respawn) during which your territory is defenseless is punishment enough?

The mines/bombs also seem extremely strong. Once they were there, and I was with single pistol, it was instant game over.

Overall very fun and intriguing mechanics! :)

Cool idea! Wasn't really obvious in the beginning how "compatible" people are or what you need to look out for. Some description might have helped. Cute graphics!

Very nice mechanic with the light and the graves, also cool atmosphere. The balancing could be a bit improved (healing/visibility 5% barely noticeable), the graves are also near-impossible to get rid of with the light. Overall still one of the most fun games I've played in this jam, great work!
