LD45 — Start with nothing

Saga of Bupkis by jelch 2019-10-20T10:54:37Z

The music is great, and the art is decent. Controls could've been explained somewhere: space rotates through combat phases (player moves, player acts, monsters move, monsters act), WASD moves during the move phase. The game is unfinished, but looks promising. Maybe it can be made into a puzzle game, with different items providing different attacks or abilities. Notes: - The monster pathing can get them stuck in certain rock configurations. - The player can perform as many actions as they want, so they can approach a monster, take their item and smack the monster with it as well. - The monsters cannot attack the player.

Mongol Space Program by mortus 2019-10-20T13:29:22Z

Launched 6 rockets and decided that the game needs some set goals. There were times when I rode through an empty field for minutes, which is obviously not great. I liked the "rhythm game" mechanic for interactions (it's much better than a simple timer with a progress), though it came with some pitfalls: - horses can move away during an interaction, - if the sequence is failed, the player has to walk away and return to restart it. The audio is "authentic", though I'm not sure about some of the used cultural references (those could be offensive).

Dot by Hadi Danial 2019-10-20T11:27:06Z

Neat hand-drawn style. I liked that the dot could jump through most of the platforms from below. Notes: - The prompt for the dash ability is placed near the tree that the player is not required to visit. - "Hacky" movements: I've started with wall-jumping (holding A/D near the wall and jumping continuously allows to scale any wall), and then discovered that the player can jump mid-air as many times as they want, so the game can be played in a "Flappy Bird" mode. - Starting after the death requires "space" to be pressed, this slows down the player and amplifies the weight of the failure.

@hadi-danial, I've tried to reproduce that midair jump bug, and it's not that easy. It's probably connected to dashing through the platforms. Here's a short video: https://youtu.be/UoFHn7Hdv7A

Fist, A True Story by GrimaceOverload 2019-10-20T12:39:39Z

Great animations, you can almost "hear" the stomping of the first boss. The only crucial animation that is missing is of tentacles being cut (they just disappear). I appreciate the player's health bar, though dying to the first boss takes a long time (every second hit of the boss does not connect for some reason).

Card Hero by Skyball 2019-10-20T09:34:38Z

I see this game as an action RPG (e.g., Diablo) with leveling replaced by items from exploration. The level design is pretty good, barring the "starting with nothing" part (the first ability could've been closer, or an arrow could've been used to prompt exploration). A few notes: - Being unable to move diagonally when two buttons are pressed simultaneously gives a very sluggish feel to the movement. - Enemies move in a straight line based on visibility, but weapons can hit through walls - this leads to "cheesing" them around the corners, plus the player cannot escape if the enemy caught up to them. - Enemies have a different amount of hit points without any indication, so the player is unable to plan their actions appropriately.

A Ghost's Tale by Elinks 2019-10-20T10:28:18Z

The art is the only thing going for this game. Some audio fragments are pretty decent too, but the incessant ghost sounds are jarring and do not mesh well with the introspective spooky atmosphere this game could've had. And what's the gameplay here? You collect blue "spots" while running from ghosts to read a fairly bleak story split in a randomly ordered chunks. Did not like it, was not immersed.

Void Rabbit by JoshuaRabbit 2019-10-20T10:03:18Z

I liked the blob animations at the start of the game. Notes: - Hidden hands in the water form a very tight passage, and the player can be reset after a delay even if they moved away from the danger spot. - Animation for fighting is too long - it clearly shows two hits, but only the first one is registered. So either this animation could be cut in half, or two hits should be properly processed. - While "hearing" the spells from the magician is a nice touch, it does not provide any advantage since the mage always attacks the current position of the player. Simply moving towards the mage allows to avoid all of the attacks.
