He actually went and did it, the mad lad! I really like the wireframe look that comes from the oscilloscope (I watched your YouTube video too), but I couldn't understand what the robot voice was saying. Something about "Danger, Danger, fire _________". Took me a while to get used the the controls, but overall a fun game and a very unique entry.

@brimstone Thanks! I used AtariVox speech synthesizer for the audio, which is originally meant for Atari2600 and Vectrex. No need to worry about understanding it, it is there more as a flavor. The full line it says when a campfire goes out is "Danger, danger, fire down."
Funny idea. Would be cool to see more videos this thing running on the oscilloscope.
Runs on an oscilloscope, and uses the AtariVox speech synthesiser; I wish I could give this a 6 for theme. You smashed this one out of the park. The game is pretty fun too once I figured out what was going on. My only "complaint" is that I'd like a video of someone playing the game on the oscilloscope. By that I mean see how it is controlled using the oscilloscope. But as far as the game is concerned, top marks. Great entry π±

The best in the theme category this year that's for sure! π€©

Wow, it's amazing you got this running on an actual oscilloscope. There really couldn't be a better fit for the theme!

It's people like you that go to the extremes that make LD special. I was looking out for your unhinged blog posts the whole way. Congrats on this.

I had this bookmarked from your blog post. Holy shit that was insane! You not only made this run on a real oscilloscope but you also EMULATED one. Truly deranged! And the gameplay felt quite good as well, animations and all. I also enjoyed the synth voice callouts. It's all perfect.

@oddballdave Here is a setup explanation and a gameplay video.
For anyone who wants to replicate what I did here, I made an oscilloscope plugin to Unity in Ludum Dare 49 with couple of friends. This game uses the tech we built then, with some improvements. You can find the plugin here: https://github.com/ptimonen/AudioRenderUnity/tree/master
As DAC I use STM32 discovery board with this software: https://github.com/tikonen/DACDriver

I never would have thought I'd see a game on an oscilloscope, and yet it's a return to the roots. Congratulations

The way the game uses the oscilloscope's wireframe output gives it a great vintage feel. This is a seriously unique piece of development!

Very interesting and unique wireframe art style! The game loop is catchy! But sometimes itβs hard to get oriented in the game during the glitch effects.

Couldn't play on an actual scope this time (as I'm using linux nowdays). The technology fits the theme perfectly. As for the game itself... not for me.

Judging by the video you posted above, the real oscilloscope graphics somehow look way better than the emulated one - unfortunately I don't have one to try it myself π
