Good job on this compo game! I think you did well in the time you had. The gameplay is really nice. I like the idea of the companion, it makes the game more fun. It's a pretty relaxing game, and it plays nice. Collecting movies and scoring points based off categories is really fun. I think it would work great as a co-op game. Overall, well done!

Cool entry! I really like the animation of pick up and rotating the movies. I wish there was some more visual variation though, as everything feels the same.

Interesting idea. This could be developed into a full-fledged analogue of "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes"

An interesting game, and I really like the wiki as a companion. Browsing through the site to find out what combinations you can make is a great concept and I think it could be developed further. I think you did an amazing job given the time constraint with constructing a fake website with tons of information in it.

Really cool! Really cool to see the randomization, and I quite liked the aesthetic of a somewhat dingy, somewhat mysterious one-room video store. I think I wish I had, like, 8 minutes rather than 1, and maybe a place to 'slot in' my final collection. That way, maybe I could 'trade up' for a better collection. E.g.: "Oh, I have the trilogy here, but if I remove swap out the last Movie, I'll could get the complete Melissa Lee videography, which is worth more!"

And maybe alternate ways to organize films - like, end-stops with 'Award-winning films of 2003' and 'The best of Alex Haris' or w/e, so that way you are not just searching off of genre.

I also wonder if it would be possible to make this work with 'real' film - you'd have to scrape wikipedia (easier than it sounds) and then write some parsers to look for good collections to meet your critera That way - folks could use actual movie resources (like wiki but also letterboxd or imdb) and be rewarded for having real film knowledge. (but non-film-buff players would still be able to complete collections just with good observational skills and googling)

Haha sorry - I'm only rambling because I really enjoyed the idea and think there are some cool places to go with it. It hits on a type of 'collectathon' fun that I've never seen a game do before - where the hunt for 'info' is as important as the hunt for the items themselves.

Yeah! Fantastic work

I don't think I've played anything quite like it before and it all works well together. For some reason it made me feel like I was in a Red Letter Media video too which is a plus. On one of the levels I ended up with no shelves (only the empty wooden one) to pick from and had to wait out the timer. I wasn't sure if it was a commentary on the state of video rentals in the early 2000s, but that's my head canon now. Big mood! Great concept and Very cozy. 👍

@ugly-robot I considered scraping Wikipedia, but wasn't sure how that would work with the compo rules. That said, building a little Hollywood simulator was a lot of fun.

@noobman64 Ah, the no shelves issue is definitely a bug, should have included a failsafe for that condition. I'm a big RLM fan, so there's probably some subconscious inspiration there lol.

The collection room has a great atmosphere, and the way you can pick up and closely examine each item is really cool. I also like that using the data source itself as another game idea. If you had more time, it might be even cooler to integrate the website directly into the game, like letting players browse it on an in-game computer. Keep up!

Really interesting game, I really liked the feeling of coming home with a pile of poorly picked movies, then when I really tried (and used the database!) it was a speed puzzle! I really liked that you shared the database, that was a great set up. Well done!

This game nails the video store vibe perfectly. Feels like stepping back in time to when you'd actually go to a rental place and browse through shelves of movies. The dim lighting, the cassette tapes everywhere - it's super cozy and nostalgic.
