Taking control of the Europe is not a new concept but yeah its eternal value 10/10

littlebear 2023-10-02 18:27

I like risk so it stands to reason that I like this game, the idea of applying it to the theme was good. Having the '?' explain each phase was a very good idea and the game play is solid. I would have liked a bit of background music but not needed. Thanks for making it :D

Hello @arachnid56 !

Looks really nice but unfortunately, i can't select the country i want to move to :sob: Your tutorial was a good point, very smart, thanks for that!

It's look like great work, ping me if i make something wrong or if you solve this potential bug

arachnid56 2023-10-02 19:51

@hangovergames Thanks!

@littlebear totally agree about the music, I couldn't find anything that suited it. Thanks for the kind comment

@flying-butter-studio Hey, sorry you're having issues, it could be a bug but has generally worked for me. Try these steps:

1. you need to be in the movement phase (second icon) 2. Click on the country you want to move units from (Must have at least 1 unit) 3. Click on the country you want to move units to 4. Use up arrow key to choose the number of units 5. Press enter to move the units

Reminds me of strategy games made by Paradox. I mean, who can say no to conquering Europe?

jukepoks1 2023-10-04 08:38

At first I thought that there is a problem, because I couldn't move units to other countries, turns out I need to have units there first in the move phase. maybe have a text saying "you currently don't have any units in any other countries, you can't move units now. you need to first attack other countries, that is done in the next phase."

It says you can see log somewhere? -> later found out that enter-button thingie.

you don't choose how many units you use to attack another country? or is it the amount of unit one country you control at that time?

Ok, I pressed the "finish turn" before pressed Enter to do the attack. Maybe it should be a button too, so it would go with rest of the UI. And have the finish turn disabled if you have selected to attack another country.

Maybe when player doesn't have anything to do show it to the player, so they can finish their turn and move on faster.

There is no log of AI turns. you just see them happen. Maybe a log list of all the events what have happened would be nice.

There is no undoing unit placement. maybe with right-mouse button to undo placement of a unit to a country. but only those units that have been placed on that turn.

Ok turns out you can attack multiple countries in each phase. Just need to do them one country at a time.

I think I found a bug. All of a sudden my germany has 39 units, when it last round had 3. Also Italy got 10 units, when it was earlier at 4.

conquest_bug2.PNG

Next round AI places wins countries that are not next to its borders. I guess the visuals don't match with the countries they have or some state of who owns what country is mangled at this point.

Can't see Norway's(Oh wait, it's over Sweden, Sweden's own count is in bad place), Croatia's and Luxemburg's unit count when placing units. Also UK and Greece unit count is in hard to read. I guess these were centered on geographically.

Got victory at the end.

Maybe add some juice to the fighting phase and moving units phase could use animation of units moving from country to other. Could use some music too!

Very interesting game, would definitely play it more after bugs have been mashed!

@jukepoks1 I really appreciate the detailed feedback. I definitely agree with you about all of the UI improvements including battle log, available actions, visual indicators etc.

I do want to continue working on this project so all this feedback is very useful to me.

Pretty familiar concept, I really enjoyed this type of a games back in school, playing them on my phone)) Overall gameplay is understandable, but what you really should work on is UX. It's really hard to differentiate some actions, game states and results of player decisions. Great job on finishing it!)

arachnid56 2023-10-05 09:46

@corporation Thanks for the feedback :) very much appreciated

kris3 2023-10-05 18:45

I liked the game but it takes a while to get used to the controls and the mecahanics. I had to restart the game two times to be able to actually play it because I was spawning in balkan countries which were covered by UI.

ascenial 2023-10-07 05:15

cool little rts game my only complaint that i really struggled with the ui and understanding what was what at the beggining but this game was a cool risk-like game.

utopia 2023-10-07 20:55

Cool strategy game, I have trouble clicking on the screen so cannot finish the game, but the theme and premise are all attractive :P

xett 2023-10-07 21:04

Just like the board game, there's alot of reading to do before you can start playing xD. I liked the idea of some sort of risk strategy game, but I wish there was more mechanics/gimmicks that play around the theme more. Maybe implementing some sort of circle that shrinks over time that players have their units too. But it's very impressive you managed to make a game like this in pygame of all things! Good job!

sean-atterbury 2023-10-07 23:31

Cool game, I appreciate the in-game help option to understand what each phase does and found the gameplay to be fairly challenging. Good job!

rekate 2023-10-08 05:21

I mean, it's a risk-like game.

it's alright however the UI needs a massive touch up. pressing enter and using arrow keys to attack and change the amount of unit you want to move should really be on screen buttons instead. additionally, alerts should be given if you're trying to do something in the wrong phase and there should be a cap to how much you can scroll/scale down the size of the map to fit in one frame.

If you continue working on this, mechanics from risk like moving troops to conquered territories after conquering territories should be brought back aswell as more mechanics and probably animations of troops moving around.

decent but needs more polish.

ganny 2023-10-18 17:01

Always nice to paint my color on the map :) Would have been nice with some kind of sound though. A bit hard to understand at first. I think the theme is a bit of a stretch but i guess it works ;). Overall quite fun!
