I experienced a few bugs:

* My up/right movement was swapped during gameplay which made it difficult to finish the game. * I was caught on enemies and unable to move a few times * Sometimes an enemy got caught on me then was thrown across the space

Overall feedback:

* I like the positional audio for the door, it lets me know where I have to go * I can't figure out how the theme was integrated in the game. What events are happening every 10 seconds?

piboy314 2022-10-03 22:29

Random things happen every 10 seconds, such as enemy spawns, control inverts as you experienced, screen colour inverts etc. @sean-esopenko

alero3 2022-10-03 22:31

@sean-esopenko, I should make this obvious in the description, but every 10 seconds and event will happen. The event is either inverted controls, inverted screen colours or one of the two monsters spawning.

Really great design for a game! You have the basics of a lot of different elements going on here and I really like that from the flashlight shadow around the edges to the way the ghosts swirl around you. If you continue development I can see some great ideas for items and cool puzzles in the future. Once I got the gun the first thing I did was try to shoot a ghost (ha). I liked the way you interpreted the theme into your game, players might benefit from more visual cues to when the changes exactly happens so they know to expect some sort of change. I see you have the bar but something like a simple screen shake would do a lot in communicating to the player that something has just happened. Hope you had a fun game jam!

Thanks for the feedback! I got super stressed near the end and didn't even think about polish 😅

I like the art, the maps feels dark and gives you that sense of danger, the music is well made and either gives a sense of urgency or makes the game overall feel chaotic when you hear the music a key makes blending with the background Music(which I found to be pretty funny). The 10 second side effects are pretty alright, I think the inverted screen color filter should've been something else like a grayscale or something like that because having a dark map turn almost completely white can burn some eyes. The items I think are pretty nice, the gun seems to be my favorite. Overall I think this is pretty well made game and I even got to beat a few of the levels. Nice Job!

piboy314 2022-10-04 11:47

Thanks! I agree the colour filter should have been less intrusive. One more thing to note is that there's also a chance that monsters will spawn every 10 seconds if none of the other effects happen :)

adamphoebe 2022-10-04 16:29

The art is nice, the music is great for the game, and it feels arcadey, the effect is a little eyeburning tho

overall, 7/10 nice game!

piboy314 2022-10-04 16:38

Thanks! I agree :)

I didn't get to see the color inversion on my play through, but I like the control swapping. I think that's a mechanic that goes under-appreciated a lot of the time. I didn't get to try all the levels, but it looks like a lot of work went into this in such a short time. That's really cool to see 5 levels. Our game was shooting for 6 at first, but we only got 3  .

Update: I saw the color inversion. It was trippy. I enjoyed it.

piboy314 2022-10-05 11:30

Thanks!! We put a lot of effort into creating levels :)

tetrapteryx 2022-10-05 15:47

I like the music and atmosphere! Well done finishing so many levels in such a short time. I'd be really curious what other kinds of events you could come up with in an exppanded version!

hilkojj 2022-10-05 18:30

I can't play the game because it crashes when I click on Level 1 :(. This is the output in the console: Screenshot from 2022-10-05 20-28-47.png

I'm sorry you are having issues, I'm no web developer so I'm not sure what is going on but stuff like ad blockers or different browsers may cause errors like this? I've tested both Chrome and Opera and they both appear to be working. I hope no one else gets this issue and that you can somehow resolve it.

Other than that thanks for checking out our game page!

piboy314 2022-10-05 23:39

Hm. That looks like a chromium-based browser console so I'm not sure what the problem could be other than extensions.

maxkyckling 2022-10-06 09:34

I loved your game! This was a really creative and fun way to interpret the theme. I loved searching through the corridors and finding keys and stuff! Loved the animations and the way the ghosts would spin away when they hit you. Really cool game! Good job

alero3 2022-10-06 12:52

Thank you so much for your kind feedback!

So the web version on itch didn't work for me in firefox but seemed fine in chrome. Took me ages to find the key on level 1 strangely.. also was a little bit confused about shooting the ghosts, after i shot looked like they died but then carried on floating round. Also probably a bug that I finished a level with the weird colour filter on and then it persisted for the rest of the levels and I got no more events I think. The concept was ok, although personally getting lost and wandering around in circles is a thing I find very frustrating in games anyway, so maybe not the most fun for me. The events didn't really feel like they made a massive difference to me, swapping the controls you get used to very quickly, the enemies are easy enough to run by anyway and the colour filter doesn't reall hinder me. The art style and execution was fairly charming in a very old 8-bit sort of way, the fitting chip tune soundtrack was the highlight for me and fit the tense mood nicely. Decent entry, gameplay is maybe the weak point.

2022-10-06 20:31

@automatonvx Thanks for the comment! What you experienced with the ghosts was not a bug, but the events shouldn't have stopped after you got the colour filter, even if it persists throughout the levels. One possibility is that you got the colour filter event, then didn't get the event that switches it back for the rest of the time that you played for.

lonewolfdev 2022-10-06 21:59

Concept is cool, but would be nice to have some feedback of the current event happening.

piboy314 2022-10-07 12:35

I liked the concept, but I wasnt able to play level 1 as it froze on the level select so just played through 2 & 3. Good stuff :)

2022-10-08 12:23

Thanks for the feedback! I'm not sure why level 1 froze, but I'm glad that you liked levels 2 and 3.

gonzalol 2022-10-11 10:44

It's a very good entry for a first timers in Ludum Dare. Classic gameplay with the twist of the 10 seconds events. Some thoughts: - Control may be smoother, sometimes the character gets blocked on the air - A lot of enemies with animations, great job on this

alero3 2022-10-11 15:33

Thank you so much for your feedback! @gonzalol

stingby12 2022-10-17 18:39

I think it's clear that it was on the rescue filter. Only one level was playable and it was literally impossible to beat. Also there was almost no effects applying in it beside the horrible invert color one and the reverse control one, and I kid you not it took me 10 minutes to find the shoot button (E).

alero3 2022-10-17 19:49

Hello @stingby12, all levels should work. I'm using the windows build and I don't seem to have any issues, I can complete all levels. Were you running the web build or something else?

On the main menu screen we did say press E to use, but we should have said E to use and shoot, thanks for your feedback.

stingby12 2022-10-18 05:30

@alero3 I was on the web version if you are curious.
