I could not make it out alive. This is a simple and pretty good little platformer, but I don't like that I have to restart the game every time I dies. I really love the music and the visuals is overall pretty good. Overall a good jam game. Well done.

baldurs 2021-10-04 17:43

Beautiful.

ratogodoy 2021-10-04 19:43

when i saw the thumbnail, my expectations were low, and i thought the game was going to have a much cruder art style, i was surprised to see a game that has some cute graphics and nice music, if i where you i would just change the thumbnail image because i think it misleads people a bit

juniora 2021-10-04 19:52

Really good atmosphere, the artwork and music make the experience pretty mellow, but with no respawning, missing a jump means having to restart your game, which really kills the enjoyment and exploration, Fix that and you'll be set!

bklolo 2021-10-04 21:50

@jk5000 Thanks for the feedback. We filled the holes with spikes to prevent falling to infinity. Glad you like the music :)

bklolo 2021-10-04 21:51

@baldurs Thanks!

bklolo 2021-10-04 21:53

@ratogodoy Thanks for the feedback. It's funny because the last LD we did was the exact opposite where we had an amazing thumbnail with an awful game :P

bklolo 2021-10-04 21:53

@juniora We have filled the holes with spikes to prevent players having to restart. Thanks :)

mmason 2021-10-05 01:37

A nice platformer, it was kind of frustrating not being able to see below me, some lanterns or something to guide the player would help here and it was frustrating having to start over every time.

bklolo 2021-10-05 02:00

@mmason Thanks for the feedback. I agree! We had fun making it and plan on adding much more in the future.

alina-baybulatova 2021-10-05 03:52

I like this sample graphic. And i really have fun to play this game.) Thank you)

bklolo 2021-10-05 03:56

@alina-baybulatova Glad that you liked it :)

nymnymn 2021-10-05 03:59

@alina-baybulatova Thank you. I haven't done a whole lot of pixel art, so I'm surprised it turned out how it did honestly.

subcreation 2021-10-05 04:01

Solid game with tight controls! It was difficult to see below, though, so a lot of the jumps were blind, and it could use checkpoints, but the graphics and music gave off very mellow vibes.

osh-studio 2021-10-05 04:03

Man has all the pickaxes, the throwing mechanic was super satisfying even when I spammed the crap out of it. Timing on obstacles was good, I managed to get to the end but only by pure luck. Not sure if it was my screen ratio / resolution but I could not see where to go or what obstacles were ahead - which felt pretty unfair.

prismapunch 2021-10-05 04:04

Fun spamming the pickaxes, wish the miner was more centered on the screen, can't see below me!

bklolo 2021-10-05 04:06

@subcreation Awesome to hear! We plan on fixing the camera and adding checkpoints soon for fun. Thank you :)

bklolo 2021-10-05 04:08

@osh-studio :joy: glad you enjoyed it. We plan on creating a better level in the future, as we had a ton of fun making the game! :)

bklolo 2021-10-05 04:12

@prismapunch Awesome to hear! We plan on fixing the camera and creating a better level in the future. Thanks! :)

nebrazif 2021-10-05 06:45

Very fun, i liked throwing pickaxe 😄

bklolo 2021-10-05 06:50

@nebrazif Glad you had fun!

wyl-team 2021-10-05 12:20

interesting platformer!

bklolo 2021-10-05 19:51

@wyl-team Thank you!

picknucker 2021-10-06 10:43

Simple and good

sceef 2021-10-06 11:51

Nice job!

harrison-dunn 2021-10-06 12:36

Nice job on this! The sprites were really charming and the presentation was overall pretty clean.

I think the camera and hitbox could use a little bit of tweaking. The camera is a bit too high, making it difficult to see where you're going to jump, especially after the early crumbling platforms before the 4 slimes. Bringing the camera down a bit gives the player more chance to react and more confidence in the jumps the first time through. The hitbox felt a tad unforgiving. Making your hitboxes slightly inside the actual sprites can make the game feel better. Pixel perfect hitboxes don't always feel 'fair'. I got stuck and couldn't make it past the 4 slimes in a row because I kept clipping one on either the start or end of the jump.

Overall, really nice submission and you should be proud of the work you did in just a few days! Congrats!

bklolo 2021-10-06 16:39

@picknucker Thank you :)

bklolo 2021-10-06 16:39

@sceef Thanks a lot.

bklolo 2021-10-06 16:41

@harrison-dunn That's great feedback, thank you!

skallywags 2021-10-07 05:51

I agree with a lot of @harrison-dunn 's feedback. The camera is too high relative to the player, and rather than having the camera closely follow the player's position, I think it should stay at the same height (not move up) when the player jumps. In addition to lowering the camera in general, this will also help allow the player to get a better view of their surroundings.

On the topic of hitboxes, yes totally agree - the hitboxes should be probably half the size they are now to be more forgiving to the player. Even though the hitbox being as big or close to as big as the sprite is technically the most fair implementation, it doesn't feel fair, because we are humans not robots playing these games :). That level of precision cannot be expected from players so completely agree.

Now, I have a few of my own suggestions too :).

I like the progression of introducing one mechanic at a time and combining them, but felt that the difficulty ramps up far too quickly once the mechanics are introduced. So I think you had the right idea, just probably needed more time to playtest and tweak, which I understand is hard for the game jam, same here :)

Secondly, a lot of these issues could be ameliorated if your jump had a variable height and quick drop down. So basically, only keep me going up while I am holding down space. Once I let go of space, bring me back down, preferably quite quickly. Mario (and many other platformers) do this very well and you can see what I mean by playing one of those. This not only feels much more responsive and fun to play, but also I have much more control over where my character goes, and even though you had issues with hitboxes and those should be fixed - even with the bigger hitboxes I would be more likely to get past them if I had this dynamic jump height option.

That being said, there is a lot here that I did really like! the art is great, albeit a little busy sometimes in the tiles but for a game jam it's great, the sound implementation is simple but still helps a lot, I liked the challenge behind the platforming sequence, I liked the concept and story behind the game, and I appreciated that you could alter your direction during the jump itself - that did help it feel responsive and fun despite my other criticisms.

I know I rambled a lot, and even though I have lots of suggestions, know that this is still a really good submission and there is a lot of potential here to turn this into a fully fledged game.

bklolo 2021-10-07 21:30

@skallywags The time you put into your response is greatly appreciated -- thank you! We plan on continuing the project, so any and all forms of feedback are welcome. :)

mighty-tiny 2021-10-10 12:49

Hate the name, love the game. Skallywags and Harrison-Dunn pretty much covered all of the necessary feedback.

wizard 2021-10-10 12:54

Really enjoyable game, really like the pixel art style, only thing maybe is to has somewhere to explain controls. Didn't know I could throw Pickaxes till I had read through the comments. But other than that a really fun experience.

automatonvx 2021-10-10 12:58

Ok, on the postive side the pixel art is really nicely done, the character and the slimes are cute and backgrounds tile nicely without being uncomfortably repetitive to look at. The music is also cute and fitting the cave atmosphere. On the downside the camera positioning gives you all of these leap of faith moments where you are trying to jump to a platform you can't see, which to me is a big no-no for a platformer. The jump also feels very floaty, again a big thing for a platformer. Also the fact that all the slimes don't move is a bit weird. Made it to the end to see a little win sign, but nothing happened. All in all feels a bit unfinished which is a shame because the art and music were good.
