We had a simular stlye nice
I liked your concept and the visulas, and most things about your game, actually. The one thing that really dragged it down, however, were the controls. I felt like they were a little bit clunky and i couldnt jump right to get out of danger properly. Sometimes the jumps didnt register at all. That alone negatively affected my gameplay a lot. Good try, however!
I like the concept, I wish that you could retry directly from getting a game over, and only being able to jump while moving was counterintuitive. I thought the screen getting darker and narrower as you took damage was visually appealing, and the graphics and sound in general were pretty good. Good work, keep it up
I couldn't really play because of the unstoppable credit but the atmosphere created was very appealing!
Things I liked: The consistent art throughout. I felt like it was quite straight forward, easy to get into. The controls were not weird.
Things I disliked: I found that having to move before I could jump again didn't feel natural. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not but I found myself dying at times when I likely woulnd't have otherwise. Secondly, I didn't hear much audio. I don't know if it was turned down significantly. Lastly, I would like to know more about the story. I didn't know much about "Jane" until Jane died.
I agree with the feedback about the credits. I seemed to encounter a few issues... My character didn't always jump when I pressed jump (something might be wrong with the "grounded" check for the character), and I couldn't figure out how to attack.
Thanks for the overwhelming feedback in the comments so far! This was our first try and we got indeed some issues with the controls. We try to improve until the next jam! Fun fact: Our Artist just started only 1 day before the jam :)
I will also give out my thanks. We were aware of certain things but sadly as we don't have that much knowledge with game development(this was our first ever published game after all) we simply lacked the skills to fix them. I will apologize on behalf of the team for that but we are really thankful for these comments and the feedback.
When I get hurt, my field of vision gets smaller. This is an interesting design. But actually, I want to kill myself instead of moving forward with a small view.
Love the pixel art..
Apparently you can attack by pressing Y - I didn't find any info on this which was a bit confusing. Mood, graphics and audio is great. Controls are, as others have mentioned, frustrating. I liked the 2d platforming, but in the scene with the hospital bed I got stuck in the stairs and had to exit the game to get out.
For a first game, nice job! As others have pointed out, the controls are iffy though. I eventually worked out how to jump but the attack was far too slow and useless to actually do anything. How is Jane supposed to defeat Death if she can't defeat the first wimpy devil she comes across? ;) The vision becoming smaller as you took damage was neat but it's impossible to play like this. Perhaps have the health regenerate over time? So if you're low on health while fighting, you retreat and then come back to fight. Anyway, keep at it guys!
As others have pointed out, the controls are rather frustrating and counter-intuitive. Also, I tried to attack the demon but it did not take any damage? On the contrary, I am blown away by your sound design. Every single track is absolutely haunting/stunning. The title screen music reminds me of Command and Conquer, the ingame screen gives me melancholic vibes reminding me of American Horror Story and the death screen is a beautiful piano piece. Props to your sound guy! I also really like the story as well as the pixel art. Oh, and the mechanic that when you take damage, the light becomes smaller - genius move. A few suggestions: 1. make the credits skippable and return to the title screen 2. make life auto-generate or add items in the world that generate life. Since everything is so dark, maybe add lights to those items as well so the player has an incentive to go there. 3. fix your ingame font. Since you are going for the pixelart look, you should make the font also pixelart.
