A very unique idea. Simple graphics. I was able to win on my second attempt. The game wasn't too easy or too hard. Kind of reminds me of Spy vs Spy for some reason. I thought the voice acting was very well done.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD45 → Detect Nothing

Great submission! I really enjoyed it :)
I enyoed the voice acting as well as the idea. I won on my 3 try, controls are smooth in my opinion
Clever idea, mechanics and controls are never boring or frustrating. Great submission
The Linux version does not seem to work in my case. When I press "New Game", a gray line under the words appears, when I press again, it disappears again.
I'm using Manjaro 5.2.11-1.
Can't start a new game on the windows version either, same thing as @phi wrote.
I was not able to start the game either!
Innovative Idea !! Dude:) Enjoyed!
Mac isn't working either sadly. Let me know if you get it working!
I was not able to start the game and the start window's UI is kinda messy
Really cool concept for a first game jam, keep it up!
@mort-jack , @mimusangel ,@phi, @leonard-graf - i recompiled the linux version. just make sure you have the resource pack with it, I've updated the instructions on the download page. Aside from that, I wasn't able to reproduce any issue. I did notice that the scenechanger, while working to change the scene, wasn't working with the transition effects and was taking quite a long time. I've shortened it and I also zipped the resource pack with the windows executable. I apologize if that doesn't solve the issue. Thank you all so much for your feedback though!
I think there's something I didn't understand, how do you find the target? I didn't see any indicator that I was getting closer or anything?
Nice, really enjoyed the game ;)
@grhyll that's part of the challenge. But if you keep an eye on your id badge you can see your exposure limit rising quicker, the closer you are.
Ooh so it's the rate at which it goes up? Initially I thought it was like a detector but when I saw it was constantly rising I gave up on this idea ^^' That's pretty original, but you need to really have a good eye ^^'
I didn't really understand how to play. I was walking around and kept an eye on the rising bar, then kept scanning but nothing showed up so I planted the charge and went to the entrance but I died every time. There was a weird hole near the entrance that appeared but I wasn't sure what it meant. Then, I tried to use the console window to read the output the game was giving me (exposure level 6 was the highest I got) but still wasn't able to figure it out. Spent about 10 minutes trying to do it but gave up in the end.
I can definitely imagine how it might have been intended to be played, but it severely lacked in feedback to make me understand what's going on. The map is a bit too large with a confusing layout. Reducing the amount of empty space on the map would greatly benefit the aesthetic in my opinion. The art is well done, however. The sounds are cool but their placement is questionable - the breathing was a nice touch but it definitely didn't sound like a mask, more like someone breathing into their microphone. To achieve the breathing effect, move further away from the microphone and amplify it in Audacity and play around with the equalizer. Also, it came from the entrance rather than the player, which sounded very strange.
Decent entry overall but needs a lot better user feedback. I suggest you polish the gameplay and player feedback first before working on the artwork in the next jam. Good work, nonetheless.
@amastryukov User feedback is working as intended. I toyed around with other ideas; camera shake or blur when close, vibrating the gamepad, hissing of the canister when you get closer, a green fog emanating around the area as it's spreading. Those things might have given a better hint of where you needed to look, aka stand and face while you press space. However, I play tested a few of these and they made the game entirely too easy and took the fun out of it. The breathing was, and I wish I could have fleshed it out more, the breathing of the player maintaining radio contact. I ran out of time before I could flush it out.
I do appreciate the feedback. :D
@psychic-ash in terms of user feedback, it might be useful to signify where the user is scanning and how the scanning actually works - is the world a grid and scanning done similar to minesweeper or is the gas canister just hidden randomly on the floor and you need to just walk around and scan for it?
Even with the feedback given by the console, I wasn't able to figure out what the nature of the gas canister was. When the exposure level was 6, I figured it was nearby so I just spammed the scanning button but nothing was coming up. I figured that all I needed to do was just to scan it when it was high and place the charge and go back to the entrance, but then I would die every time. There is nothing telling me that my scan wasn't successful, how close I was (how high is exposure level 6? Are there 6 levels total or is the highest 10? 20? 100?). I see the bar going up but I can't tell how much faster it is moving and where exactly is the threshold that will make me go "oh shit, it's right here somewhere, I just have to scan a few times to find it".
@psychic-ash Thanks, it did work now! Though I was sort of disturbed when oddly realistic heavy breathing came from my laptop's speakers
Congratulations on successfully completing your first Ludum Dare game!
I liked the exploratory nature of the game, but maybe you could make walking around and looking for things a little more interesting by adding more elements to the game (more different hiding places, more stuff to find on the way, etc.), rather than having a map this big. I understand that larger amounts of content are very difficult to create when you're one person and you only have a couple of days. So for a jam game, I think this is great! It was easy to understand, gameplay was intuitive, there was mostly good feedback after interactions etc.
What you've managed to do is pretty impressive, especially given you've only been doing this for a year! Nice work, I hope you continue developing, see you in April! :)
@phi Noted, I made a blog entry about the journey of making this game. While I am certainly not trying to make excuses. I simply did not have enough time in which to do everything I wanted. All and all I estimate that this game was created in about 24 hours of work time. :( Many coffee beans gave their essence so this game could be made. :P I actually had wanted to make a smaller room and a larger one and split the rooms into difficulty choices. Time being a thing... always next jam :P
Very cool little game! Quite simple and I have to say I cheated by looking at the console logs to help me find the canister, but was able to properly set the explosive. Lovely animations and graphics. Great job overall!
Interesting idea! I think this can evolve to a great game, with some improvements. As said before, the map is too big with lot of blank spaces. More visual indications are welcome, like green fog, blur, etc. Beside that I think the theme of the LD is not very well explorated here. But overall is a good game. Good job!
Nice little game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 45 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/zqhSjSyg75I
