Can you kill the death tater?
I hope so. Last time I tested it I could kill Darth tater. Unless something majorly changed, or I messed up programming you should be able to kill them. They just have a LOT of health. (Don't use Burger Flipper)
Wow, the darth taters are hard. Managed to defeat the first set but the second with the rockets too were tough. I liked it though, you kinda get into a rhythm which is pretty fun! I think some kind of graphical warning that they were about to fire would be good to add, but it was fun! The real time aspect was great to prevent spending ages on each turn :P
Fun game! Darth tater is really hard! Some things I think you can fix: - Instructions are difficult to read over the gridded floor. - Real time enemy bullets at turn based player movement feels weeeird... but fresh - Burger Flipper doesn't have a real use - There should be more levels and enemies before Darth Tater
Pretty fun! Graphics and diferent enemies can be enhaced. Keep the good work!
@MacDoom @CiaranW Yeah I have to say the Darth Tater fight was a little too hard on the progression curve than expected. I think the main problem was that I got too good at the game from testing it over and over again that I wanted more difficulty. I feel once you understand the Darth Tater fight you can deal with it pretty easily. I understand why Burger Flipper feels useless, but it can one shot the burgers, burger shooters, and some later enemies like angry baguettes, and the Gatling Gum.
This is interesting! I'd love to see this developed further. :) I got stuck at the "extra power" round with the upgraded Darth Tater. This game gets hard! It would be cool to see some audio added, and I'd like the game to be a little easier for players like me. ;)
@Steve Sparkes Yeah Darth Tater was one level that we kept trying to make easier, but we found that the level would act as a good mini boss and making it too easy got rid of the fun of accomplishing him. Of course that was my opinion and I completely understand why you think he was too hard. I just didn't want someone who I put too much effort into to be a pushover.
Also I just posted a Guide in the description for this game. I think it will really help!
Level 1) to avoid the burgers think smart about where you move. Your burger flipper can also one shot kill them, but at the price of some of your hp.
Level 2) Keep your eye out for that slow shooting Burger Shooter. He may not appear as a threat at first, but if you are not careful he can slowly rack up damage.
Level 3) A 1v1 duel with a Darth Tater can be hard. He shoots deadly lasers at you which may be tough to dodge. What you need to know is stay away from the melee attack. It does two damage! It would be better to run far away from him and get hit by a laser than to be hit by a melee attack.
Level 4) 2 Darth Taters is really difficult, you want to take out the melee one first. He is the one closest to you. Then go after the guy in the bottom left corner of the screen. He moves slower but fires faster. He also only does 1 hearts worth of damage.
Level 5) A super Darth Tater can be really tough, luckily you can move extra fast for this level. I recommend stay far away from him moving in a methodical circle around him staying at the edge of his movement. He is hard though if you work hard to avoid his lasers, and get in the pattern of the fight you can beat him.
That will be the end of this guide. There are still more levels beyond Super Darth Tater, but I believe with the knowledge gained from the beginning fights you can tackle anything.
This game is great, I completed it twice, assuming that the level with 3 pizza ovens shooting heat seeking missiles, and two of the burger projectile plants is the last one. It would have been nice to have an ending screen or even just loop back to the beginning. It was an impressive quantity of levels for a game. The tutorial seemed tacked on compared to some of the other elements, but having a tutorial at all is well beyond the scope of the game, although I thought pressing L was an especially odd choice.
This game did a great job of meshing turn-based, and real-time mechanics together in a single game in a rather innovative way. The humor was good, but it didn't work all that well for me. Perhaps part of it is that the game is so awesomely intense, that there doesn't seem to be a lot of time to appreciate it. Additionally all the little things that could be done with audio to enhance the humor is missing, as audio is something that isn't in this game.
The graphics are very good for the most part. The 'machine gum' isn't super clean looking, and in my first playthrough I kept trying to target squares to move to because of the floor pattern, despite the fact that my movement radius was clearly a circle. I didn't really get that into my head the first time through.
For me, the trickiest thing about this game was evaluating the audio, basically that there wasn't any. Ultimately, I had to ask how leaving out audio effected the game as a whole. The one issue I had that was core to the game was that sound would have been very helpful in knowing when you took damage. I would constantly come out of a skirmish only to have to check my remaining health. Often I wouldn't know how I suffered the damage I had taken. Did I dodge too early? Did I let an enemy get too close to me? While the animations did a good job presenting some of that information, it was still a problem; especially when dealing with pass-through projectiles.
Overall it was still a quite excellent game despite that. Probably the most complete feeling LD game I've played so far.
Darth Tater defeated me, sadly! I still enjoyed what I saw. The mixture of turn-based and real-time definitely felt incompatible at times so 5/5 for theme!
Seriously though, I had fun and think with some new sprites and a few sound effects here and there this game will get even better!!
Cool and fun :) Nice game and nice interprettation of the theme
cool game! darth tater was hard; holy crap! fun though!
I got up to two darth taters! Amazing that you did all this with visual basic!
@Articulated9 Thanks for your feedback! I feel sad that I made the game too hard and people didn't get past the Darth Tater part. It is a shame because I put a lot of effort into the rest of the game. The audio was something I missed out on which sort of sucks, but I just couldn't get any good audio or music that would fit with the mood I am going for.
@Emery Thanks! I am glad that you found my game fun to play!
@Jonathan Daar Congrats on getting up to two Darth taters! Based on descriptions I've heard from other people getting there is pretty hard! The spiriting was really the most fun part for me because I could use puns for my designs which really made me more enthusiastic about my work leading me to put more effort into it.
The multiple darth tater and projectile bosses were really hard. The combination of turn-based movement/attack and real time projectiles was surprisingly different but I found it quite fun.
neat idea. At first thought I would play some kind of burger simulator but after darth tater came in I was kinda confused haha. The integration of theme was pretty good and I think you did a good job on the gameplay. I only got till the part with the 2 vader and 2 plant burger thingys. Keep up the good work!
