I really like that you implemented multiplayer. Tempted to get a few friends on to see if it works ;) After successfully killing a triceratops, I proceeded to climb out of the map. All in all it was fun! Don't quite get what 2 genres it combines but I loved the models and the animations were great. I didn't like the rainforest noises blasting into my left ear the whole time though.

Love your ambition in making an online multiplayer game for this jam. Once I found a room with players, I was unable to select Raptor or Triceratops. My mouse disappears completely from the game window. WASD does nothing. Alt+Tab or Alt+Enter don't seem to fix either. Any ideas?

Before I start my review, I have a few bugs:

I tried joining the games I saw, but it failed the numerous times I attempted, even after letting the game access my internet. Eventually the servers went down and I was left alone ;( Also, when pressing escape while in the game, the mouse is freed but remains hidden, and returning to the main menu holds no avail, as the mouse is still invisible. Also, while playing, sometimes the mouse remains hidden but is unlocked, so moving to the right or left caused the mouse to leave the window sometimes.

Also, I added 2 players to the game for whatever reason, and after clicking on carnivore, the game froze. Idk

Now onto the review:

First thing I noticed was the camera was angled a bit to low for my taste, and therefore it was hard to see everything. In addition, moving the mouse to move the player, which in turn moved the camera was a bit different from the traditional move camera to move player, but it works

Eventually I saw three herbivores, who magically walked into the air and all started floating in one spot xD It was a sight to behold.

Also, the carnivore attack animation fit, but because the herbivore animation required it to stand still, it looked kinda strange sliding across the ground xd A fix for this is to use animation masks or something, and have the legs in its own separate continuum, so when the attack animation is played the legs stay in the walk animation. I did something like that a year ago, so I've forgotten how to fix it but you could probably find a guide somewhere.

Aside from a few collision bugs, I was able to romp around the island freely, yet without any prey to hunt :( I'll probably hop back on later with some friends to check out the pvp though xd

It was a neat little "battle royale" game, but currently without any friends online, it seemed like walking simulator. Don't get me wrong the pvp seems fun, but I'll have to try it much later xd.

Well done you two!

Hey Guys,Thanks for the feed back so far. We noticed we have some mouse locking issues when the dino select screen comes up. The new download fixes the main one when you join but if you die it will stay locked. We are working on fixing those now as they are game stopping.

arun-donti 2018-04-25 02:32

I'm not sure what two genres this game combines, but It was fun. I got to put my friend in his place, which was fun. I'm super impressed that you got an online multiplayer game to work in the course of a weekend, kudos to the devs. I definitely would have liked some sound or visual feedback that registers when you hit another player, my friends and I didn't know whether or not damage was working until one of us died. Still had fun .

eriku 2018-04-25 02:32

Agree with the above posters: kudos on your ambition. It's always interesting to learn where your limits are in 48 hours. Definitely a bit rough around the edges, and due to networking issues I explored the island on my own. But keep it up and next time, keeping your current ambition, I think you guys could get a much more polished result.

pcoridan 2018-04-25 02:49

@ErikU @arun-donti @theomaniacal Thank you guys for checking it out! We definitely bit off a little more then we could chew haha. The dino select bugs should be fixed now we forget to unlock and make the cursor visible at certain times.

@kataware Thank you so much for the detailed feedback. Everything you said we agree with 100%, just ran out of time to fix/tweak those things. We plan to work on the game more and get it to where wanted for LD, which is more of a survival game.

kataware 2018-04-25 02:52

@pcoridan Well I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors! Always remember, you just made a game in a weekend! where you take it from there is up to you two, and who knows where it'll take ya.

conroy 2018-04-25 02:57

@ErikU @Kataware @Rytannic @Arun Donti @theomaniacal Thanks so much for the feedback!!!! It means a lot!

very impressive! congrats for this work!

It looks like it would be cool. I tried to join a game from a guy called @pcoridan, which is the same name as one of the devs haha? Maybe it was just a default name? Couldn't find anyone on the island and my internet is kind of bad so that's why I disconnected soon after I guess. It was a bigger problem though, considering the view is too angled downwards (as someone commented) and I wasn't sure if I just couldn't find anyone or if there wasn't anyone there since it was hard to look far.

I also don't really think there are two really incompatible genres here. But on the innovation side, really cool to see a multiplayer game, it looks really hard to do something like that. Would be better if it had some kind of AI too, though, but that's really hard for a short project I guess.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get folks in to play a multiplayer game when I was tried (I tried getting a bunch of folks to play with me that I knew but they all were a bunch of bums). I had the issue where all the triceritops would congregate roughly where I started but floating in the air so I couldn't attack them. This made it difficult to progress. Eventually they would start walking off into the ocean. I think we could consider that a game breaking bug, so if it can be corrected it's well within the rules to resubmit with that fixed. If so tag me and I can re-evaluate and also see if I can get someone to play with me next time.

luciax 2018-04-25 03:07

Really love the idea of the multiplayer survival, though hard to experience as I could not match other players. The art works are nice, and I believe it would be interesting to play with friends!! Still there are some bugs and problems about the camera and moving (sometimes stuck in corner). Keep your ambition and make a more polished one!

pcoridan 2018-04-25 03:10

@sohakes Hey yes that was me! I was looking for you on the island! We didnt get a chance to really test over the internet. We put up my phone hotspot a few times to check and it seemed to work. Thanks for checking it out a bit at least!

sohakes 2018-04-25 03:25

Oh, that's really cool hat we were at least able to connect. My internet isn't helping too, it's hard even to download games. Good to know @pcoridan!

hel 2018-04-30 01:15

My raptor gonna die because of hunger! 8)) Pretty funny at all, awaiting the Tiranosaurus as bonus :))) P.S. There is a little bug - my unite became Nautilus :)) I was walking under the water...

rodrigo-denubila 2018-04-30 02:24

Interesting concept and very ambitious making a multiplayer game for a LD. Unfortunetely I couldn't find another player onine, but played a little. I liked the dino models, and animations are pretty good too. I think you should try an orbital camera on the model (I missed the freedom to look around), take a look at cinemachine plugin in asset store

Good job in your first LD, next will be better!

Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional

Really smooth playing 3d, and not matter what, dinosaurs always make things better. Sucked I couldn't find any players online though. I still have to give you props for the smooth 3d and for being ambitious enough to make a multiplayer game on your first jam. I would like to try it again later if I can get a friend to network with me.

ratherjolly 2018-05-11 04:40

Hosted Multiplayer??? my hat is off to you. That is crazy cool for a game jam. Also, great job on the added detail in the look of the level level and ambiance audio. Nice Work :)

peta 2018-05-11 08:54

Hi! Nice game! It is realy nice!

Would you rate my game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/the-game-that-bad-that-it-is-actually-good

Thx a lot! :)
