I liked the graphics.
I think the experience as it is needs a bit more something. The most conventional thing you could add would be challenge, but there's other ways you could go.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD29 → Clubbed

Bug: You can't get gems from above.
I'm... not sure what else I can say.
Nice job with the audio & soundtrack...
It is not a bug. You have to dig across to get the gems. You also are unable to go upwards at all. There is more we would have liked to add to the game such as obstacles and maybe something that chases the caveman through the tunnels he has dug, but there just wasn't enough time to get it all integrated for the Ludum Dare.
This is actually pretty good for 8 hours. I think this has potential to be a good puzzle game, and if you're interested I'd say go forward and polish it up. As for some suggestions, you can add obstacles as you said and/or utilize the limits of the game as obstacles themselves. Since the player cannot move up, have certain objects like ladders, falling rocks, etc. There are plenty of ways to make it into a full-fledged puzzle game.
This is a good start, but there isn't much gameplay here. Adding some variety and adjusting the player speed would go a long way.
Not much as it is, but damn that dude can dig! You managed to make something though, good job.
