LD38 — A Small World (3)

Small Town Mines by M2tias 2017-04-25T22:01:24Z ♥ 1

This game is loads of fun, and my favourite use of the theme so far. The simple animations (especially the helicopter!) actually give it a lot of character. It's interesting to see how different actions affect the suspicion (even eating!), but I think it says a lot about real life. I found it all (especially the utterances of the townsfolk) very funny, while also quite disturbing, which IMO is a great achievement!

It wasn't completely clear what my goal was at the start, but maybe that's intentional? Anyway, I figured it out after playing for a little while, and managed to escape with 40 gold! One thing I wasn't sure about was whether the fire had any purpose; I think I managed to use everything else. Perhaps I should have paid the tip portal some more gold... :D

This is great: the minimalist style is really attractive, but the animations and sound effects still make the game immersive. The game-play can be kind of addictive.

I found I didn't need to jump very often (it was easier to just be careful about shooting too much). It might be nice to add a flying enemy or something else which made jumping more useful.

Overall a really nice job! :)

Dwarf World by rnlf 2017-04-25T17:17:29Z ♥ 2

The dwarf model and the animations are great: I love the style and everything fits well together, especially with the sound effects. Good job!

I found the puzzles totally absorbing. It reminds me a lot of Sokoban and Kye, but with very distinct mechanics. In particular I was impressed by how many different ways the lifts can/must be used; they made the puzzles a lot richer than I first expected - especially level 3, which was hardest for me.

I'd be interested in playing more of these puzzles if you get round to it. I think you could probably squeeze out a few more without needing to add any features! I even (briefly) looked into making my own but it was a bit too difficult in the spare time I had. Am I right in thinking you exported TMX or Tiled JSON to a lua format? If so it'd be interesting to see the raw assets and have a go at making some! :)

Here are my turn counts, in case anybody's interested: L1: ???; L2: 47; L3: 102; L4: 78.

TELEMATICS by rnlf 2016-12-13T13:30:00

Interesting use of the theme! I also found it difficult as all hell, but maybe that's kinda the point?

The scene itself is beautiful, and I was really impressed by the teletypewriter in particular. I found I was sometimes getting feedback a little too quickly, while at others I was craving information and getting nothing; this was great and the game was incredibly tense as a result. The jamming silo doors was a nice touch; I totally freaked out when that happened.

If you take it any further I'd like to see a couple more degrees of escalation to balance the difficulty. I agree with amras0000 that some clearer indication of whether the enemy is escalating or not might be helpful, but I'd also worry about relieving the tension too much with changes to the dynamics of the user feedback. It might be that with more granular escalation (and so more feedback via the teletypewriter) this isn't so necessary.

Some extra incentive (such as a leader board or at least an indication of how long you survived) might also be good, though I think the game's tone would suffer if the player could 'win'.

Lots of fun; a great game :)

Elevator Samba by euske 2016-12-13T13:02:00

I love the idea of this game, especially for the theme. The art, music and gameplay work well together, too. I can live with platforms blocking the bullets in general, but shooting while going down was particularly hard so I really struggled as the elevator filled up with creatures.

Something for a post-compo version? When I started the title obscured the passenger's speech, which made it slightly confusing at first.

Pancakey or not, it's really charming and a lot of fun. Also what sort of building has a jungle in the basement?! :)
