LD54 — Limited Space

Package Express by SpicyMarcus 2023-10-11T21:06:53Z

This reminded me of Puzzle express and Ocean express! I liked that you could move onto another truck once one was full, it was a nice moment of relief after I realized I had messed up a bit lol. I wish that there was even more urgency communicated through the game to push me to really fill them up as fast as possible! Another big thing is I that I was able to play the game without much onboarding, which is great because a lot of the LD54 games I'm playing seem to have longer tutorials.

Love that you went this route (pun intended) with the theme of limited space. I wish the camera rotated with the car, or the controls were relative to the world not the car, but at the same time the current controls and camera do lend a hectic feel to parking that is inherently more realistic! My favorite part was actually seeing other cars crash and push me around, and I think you could lean into that more if you want to expand the game, to lend a more humorous angle.

Pixel Piles by Gabriel Chan 2023-10-11T20:52:52Z

This is easily one of the cleanest looking game jam games I have ever seen. The first thing that caught my eye was the presentation of the credits, menu options, and tutorials on the sides. Usually I would recommend people to focus on gameplay first, but I definitely appreciate all of the polish that goes into the presentation!

The game idea is very unique and engaging. The only thing issue I had was I felt that the current piece being locked after it starts to drop felt rather restrictive. It may just be a skill issue lol, not a game issue.

I love how the game puts you in immediately without any tutorials and lets you pick up things as you play. For a gam jam game, I was impressed to see an auto-battler with inventory management. It seems like a perfect choice for the theme, yet I feel like it would be a huge undertaking. My only criticism is I do wish the game moved a bit slower so that I had more time to react to things earlier on, it feels like I am going up against great odds when getting a grip on the game initially.

Escape from the clutches by Anton4ik-dev 2023-10-11T21:01:58Z

Surprisingly clean presentation for game jam! While the mechanics are explained thoroughly in the text tutorials, it is very easy to forget or misunderstand once you start playing. It would be much better to start with one mechanic, and add on other as the game goes on.

It's an interesting concept for sure. The game itself is neat! The only issue you have is onboarding the player, but that's understandable given a game jam. It would be interesting if there was a way to make this game where the onboarding was minimalist and intuitive.

@tpace Thanks for the feedback! I think what you're getting at is the option to switch to the next path before the current timer runs out and auto-switches.

We considered this, but we realized that what makes our concept work is the urgency of having an overall timer and a switch timer, both of which are fixed. The overall timer makes you find a viable path as soon as possible. The switch timer limits the current paths you can explore.

If we allowed you to switch before the switch timer goes off, I think we give you too much freedom to find a viable path, and its becomes harder for us to design interesting levels.

That being said, maybe I misunderstood your suggestion altogether, so let me know.

@smoe @someone I appreciate your feedback on the movement. Having to press WASD again for each move was an intentional design decision, because we want you to feel the urgency and also have to fully intend each move. We did try a more typical holding-style movement but our current model felt best.

That being said, I do agree that we could add additional buffering for movement for the case where you press it faster than its ready.

@kevin-zhang Totally, I wonder if there is a way for us to add audio that is unique to each path or step you take.

@paul-nadan You are spot on! This was our original concept but we descoped it because we didn't have a composer or artist on hand.

@johnsensei Great idea!

Nice Park! by Barbabulle 2023-10-11T21:15:56Z

Best game I've played in LD54 hands down. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it, because I played another parking simulator and it was not that engaging. There are a lot of small things you do very well, that come together to create a very fun package. The percentages on the parking with a visual representation, the fact that you can crash into your own parked car messing up your own parking, my personal urge to always park backwards lol, the pixel art, honking, vfx. There is so much polish here its crazy. And my favorite part is that I feel it is just the right amount of frustrating, where it is challenging me to do well but I still feel like I am in control and have the ability to make it.
