LD39 — Running out of Power

Tiny Explorer by rijnswand 2017-08-06T23:33:37Z

You know, this is one of my favorites so far. I played through three times before I got to the end, and it wasn't even a frustrating experience for me. I feel like I bonded with the rover, like we went through some shit together. I named him Marvin.

Our first trip was mostly spent figuring out controls and the best way to go about getting to where we needed to go. We ended up falling into that giant crater after the second power pad - lesson learned haha. Marvin's not much of a climber. My camera glitched through the bottom of the world when we got to the bottom of the hole which was a silly and interesting experience.

Round two, we carefully avoided the giant crater and pressed on. We got to the third pad and night began to fall, which was scary to me, because the terrain was slippery. While waiting for daybreak I accidentally hit esc and killed us. Again, lesson learned.

Round three, we eventually made it all the way to the end! Marvin got home. I felt accomplished.

Although the rover is slow, I think it is appropriately so. The power levels were really well-balanced and I liked being able to take my time and figure out the best path to where we were trying to go. The turn radius/controls were a bit janky, but it sorta made me feel like we were driving through sand, and looking from it at that angle, Marvin's behavior suddenly made a lot of sense.

It was fun to fight with the terrain and there were a few "oh shit don't slide!" "Marvin we ain't about to climb that mountain where are you going?!" moments but I had a lot of fun with it. Very relaxing game, the art is clean and the sounds are really well-suited.

Fun features I'd consider adding if you're gonna keep at it: More open-world exploration, taking samples of things, little easter eggs, maybe some new terrain features or different worlds.

Overall you nailed the theme and I had a great time with this one! Nice work!

This is one of my favorites so far!

I thought the pellet system was very well-balanced. My bleeding heart died twice trying to send out messages at the comm tower. Although it was short it was very immersive, the dialogue and writing was very effective. The music really set the mood and it turned out darker than I thought it would for the cute whimsical art style.

Overall it came together very nicely and everything made a lot of sense. It was fun exploring the little planet and the sound-effects were really well done. The only bothersome thing I noticed was being able to enter the caves/areas from the top or the sides, I got stuck in there a couple of times, but that's just a nit-pick. It was a great little puzzle, well-done!

I love the mood of this game! I did get a little frustrated timing the jumps from the platforms, but overall it wasn't *too* difficult, and I was still enjoying myself trying to figure it out which is so important. Using J and K was an odd setup and it felt a bit clunky but after a while I adjusted to it. Could use a little more instruction initially but I figured it out quickly enough. I thought the background noises for the text, especially for the big robot, were dissonant and distracting, but overall the audio was pretty on point. The art style is really nice, the color palate works really great together and it is overall very visually pleasing. The animation is pretty smooth; I did get stuck in the robot who gave me the glove but once I reloaded I couldn't replicate it. I adore the megaman-style scrollers. The story is very touching, I'm impressed that so much got done in such a short amount of time. Overall this was a very enjoyable game and I'll definitely be checking back for updates! Great job guys!

The title cracks me up. I love the progressive explanation of mechanics and in-game tutorial. Maintaining proper energy levels and timing with the turrets is a good balance of fun and challenging. The game is clever and well-balanced, the challenge increase feels natural. The puzzles are engaging and make me want to keep trying at it, even when I keep dying it isn't a frustrating experience. Momentum is intuitive and smooth. The aesthetics are nice, it's easy to look at and the sound effects are fun. It was vaguely reminiscent of Linerider.

Jumping can be a little finicky on sharp corners and some of the timing with the turrets seems to need to be *too* exact, or maybe I'm just missing something haha. When I discovered the double-jump I was like OHHH.

[This](///raw/dea/a/z/64ba.png) level is currently giving me a run for my money, I can get over to the right but timing that jump up onto the left ledge is super tricky.

I'm going to keep trying at it and if I get through it I'll update!

Overall a really fun little game, definitely going to be keeping this cute little robot!
