LD38 — A Small World

Trapped Inside by Baconinvader 2017-04-29T16:52:05Z

For anyone who's trying to figure out the controls, here's an incomplete list: * WASD: Movement * Up/Down: Select option from a menu * X: Pick up item * C: Inspect what's in front of you / Activate terminal * V: Drop held item * B: Inspect held item * Z: Use held item * Space: Skip dialogue * 0-9: Select item / Enter keypad code

To everyone who left comments:

Thanks so much for all of the feedback - I didn't expect to get such friendly and constructive feedback for my first (proper) Ludum Dare entry!

Originally I'd planned to make the tabs moveable windows and include background music and an in-game explanation, but these were some of the things that I didn't get around to doing, along with properly fixing doctors and teachers so they work properly.

I may release an updated version at some point that would be linked from the game's landing page (the white screen) but if I do I don't intend to replace the original entry.

Would have loved to rate this but unfortunately it doesn't run too smoothly on my laptop, so I'l wait until I've tried it on another computer to give this a rating. Already seems quite entertaining though!

LD42 — Running out of space

Deadly Delivery by Rogue Studios 2018-08-14T20:04:53Z

This is really, *really* enjoyable to play (even if my high score is 5), and the art is pretty effective. Plus, I like the fact you can play different characters and levels by reaching higher high scores and increasing your total.

If there's anything I could suggest, it could have a time-limited mode to force you to think quickly - perhaps limit time per move to 5 seconds, and give a time bonus for moving quickly?

Otherwise, well done, keep up the good work!

This looks cool, but unfortunately I can't try this out because I don't have anyone to test it with :/

@jeke It looks like the download is at the bottom of the itch.io link?

There's a decent tutorial (that I accidentally skipped the first time round), and it's pretty enjoyable once you figure out how to play it. The graphics and audio are fitting, and I like the take on the theme (running away from space?).

@pierre-avinain @happy44300 Thanks for the encouragement! It means a lot for my second (published) LD entry.

@parkerduncan Glad to hear you liked the idea - I'm curious to see how others would have done it (I haven't seen any for this LD so far).

As for supermarkets, they need "stuff", which is produced by factories. If you build a factory nearby (realistically, anywhere with utilities, since they have a large range) supermarkets should then have "stuff" to sell.

I've added penalties for debt to a [to-do list](https://gitlab.com/dacoffee/ld42/milestones/3) for a future post-LD update. The original plan was that any buildings whose balance dropped below 0 would move out, leaving an empty lot that needs demolishing, but this wasn't added by the deadline. Instead, I'm intending to add an income-based tax mechanism, meaning that if a building's needs aren't satisfied, their income drops, meaning you can't claim tax from them.

@11tomi12 Thanks for the suggestion - I've added that to the post-LD to-do list.

@gexalmighty @wevel I didn't have time to complete the proper incomes/expenses breakdown in the Finance menu - you might have noticed how small and empty that menu was. I've added that to the to-do list as well.

The actual transactions log was designed partly as a debugging tool to be honest, but I kept it in as it's somewhat helpful. If you're not sure which buildings are costing money, you can identify them by the number in the "reason" column of the log. This corresponds to a building ID, which you can find for each building by clicking on the building and looking at the number in the address bar. (Don't change the URL manually though, as that will reload the game and you'll lose your progress.) I'm aware this is tedious, so I'm hoping to improve that at some point.

Civilization by Ronmori 2018-08-14T19:40:35Z

The art and the audio is pretty good!

You might want to reword the instructions underneath the game - it took a few minutes for me to realise that you had to send troops to retrieve resources from farms/mines/etc.

In addition, it looks like the time doesn't pause when you click pause, and then remains out of sync with the UI and music when you unpause, meaning time stops when you unpause. It seems like that's the issue that the anonymous person above posted about, since they also pressed the pause button then couldn't click on stuff.

Overall though, good work on your first LD! (at least, I think this is your first LD?)

Elevator Operator by Evan Charfauros 2018-08-14T20:34:14Z

This is a neat puzzle game - nice visuals, a decent concept and some good jokes.

The only problem I have is that I can't seem to get past 45-ish animals delivered, because animals stop spawning around 40 deliveries? I'm not sure if this is intended, but if it is, it could potentially be a bit clearer.

Despite not being able to finish the game, I managed to sink more than half an hour into playing this; it's pretty fun regardless. Well done on your first entry!

Crate Typist by Luca1152 2018-08-14T21:21:08Z

This is a pretty simple, enjoyable typing game!

I think my only real complaint is that it's sometimes hard to keep track of which word you started typing. Perhaps you could display it in a box in the centre/at the bottom? This probably isn't even an issue for most people, but when I got interrupted mid-word I sometimes found it hard to continue typing that word.
