LD29 — Beneath the Surface

SUNK by GeorgeBroussard 2014-05-02T02:30:00

I had a pretty strong emotional reaction to this; it felt a little wrong to be playing it and slowly watching my little guy die (collection of pixels that he may be). The experience is well crafted though offputting.

Tenkosei ROBO by radmars 2014-05-01T19:43:00

Woah, what a polished game and pretty fun too. Got to the end and wanted to keep going because of the bizarre story and simple but satisfying game play. I’m interested enough to wish there was a little more variation, whether it comes from narrative choice or battle strategy. The graphics, sound, and mood come together to create the campy-anime mood really well.

Hey, I also made a tree/root game. This is nice, though I agree about the mice. Maybe it's because I'm using a touchpad, but I never saw the mice, which made it seem that much more random. With a little warning and a way to combat them, it would be a really mechanic. Nice tutorial.

Vaults Inc by Bruno Massa 2014-05-02T04:41:00

Man, I really like this game and the logic of building and placing tiles. I think the hexes make me think of Settlers of Catan. The intro was a nice way to set the mood (though it might have had some spelling mistakes...) A few things: I've filled up the whole screen, can't scroll and can't seem to get the game to finish. Also, it lets me buy and possibly overwrite previously placed tiles? I'm not sure if that's a bug or a "feature" that I discovered near the end. Whatever it is, the effects that it will have on the game are not accurately represented in the +/- on the board. Some of the tiles seem completely useless, as in they cost a lot of money and just seem to hurt you (For example, the warehouse costs a lot of money and has a negative effect on income...derr). Also maybe I missed something but I'm not sure what the glowing numbers under the blocks in the marketplace mean. Basically, I've been playing this game, the mood and set-up are really nice and my mind is trying to piece together the puzzle, but there are some buggy things detracting from the experience.

Show a Little Love by alastaira 2014-04-30T23:04:00

I really like seeing people do more "non-standard/psychological" takes on the theme. The people are bright pink for me, though it didn't throw me since the world is pretty simplistic. I'm not sure what kind of mood you're going for. It feels kind of like you're shooting at the people with signs, which I think is a little...odd for a game about love. At some points I clicked on someone when they were too close and I couldn't read what was on the sign (which is the interesting part of the game). If it's supposed to be meditative about inner beauty, I'd slow it down/maybe not make the people look like they are swarming you. Anyway, great job!

Grow by weazen 2014-05-01T20:15:00

Hey I made a root game too - The graphic are simple, organic and pleasing. As other have mentioned, there doesn't seem to be much beyond, well, growing. The rock placement is a little random; sometimes you see that you've been trapped by the environment pretty early up on the screen, but can't do anything to react to it. But the control and movement feels good so I think you've got a good base if you wanted to expand and add some complexity. Highscore 51.

Cave Explorer - Ben Powley UPDATED by MrProMilkyBarKid 2014-04-30T23:13:00

Hey, it's my first Jam too! Okay so I got to level 3 and then gave up because sometimes my little guy just stops walking, which was fine until I met the first enemy (the green cube) and then it was pretty annoying. He also died randomly a few times on the way down and I wasn't sure why; perhaps a sound effect or animation or something would make that more clear? Speaking of sound and animation; good job. It looks and feels nice when you start up because the lighting, pixel art, music and mood all match.

Dr. Pepsi Marriage Consultant by Thingo Studios 2014-05-02T03:56:00

Hah. I feel like this is exactly the kind of thing I would make on very little sleep and after drinking a lot of Pepsi. It's pretty bootleg, but in a charming way. With a little more polish (some sort of physics hit detection for enemies, the word intimacy appearing on the screen, the dialogue in scenes instead of text files) it'd be a funny/insane little story game.

LLOYD by danialhyatt 2014-04-30T04:59:00

Loved the art and music and was getting in to it when...well the torn up map from the second bottle seemed stuck on the screen. I tried smoking some cigarettes to calm myself down and then the whole game crashed.

LLOYD by danialhyatt 2014-05-01T20:25:00

@danialhyatt for what it's worth, I think if the audience weren't folks from the game compo trying to quickly rate as many games as possible, it's not too crazy to expect them to stick with it. The mood does draw you in and I could tell there was more to the game from the little tidbits of story being thrown out in the text. A little calm, interactive fishing mechanic (besides just waiting) would probably be all it needs for the more impatient. I do want to try this again and might get to it after I finish trying to rate as many games as possible.

Death's Lounge club by LazyParia 2014-04-30T04:37:00

Impressive art and a really ambitious project for 48 hours. I'm not sure exactly how my choices effect how the club is doing, but it's a great start.

Mining With Lasers by PatrikL 2014-04-30T05:10:00

This was fun; I was having a little trouble playing it on my laptop without a mouse. Love the worms.

ITS A TREE by lyla 2014-05-01T20:26:00

Thanks for all the comments. Controls are now on there - I might get around to making root selection less spazzy at some point.

Space flappy shrimp bubble ninja blob 2048 X-Alpha Turbo Edition by elpaulo 2014-05-01T05:01:00

The bubbles dying reminds me of popping bubble wrap. What a satisfying sound...I wish there were a couple more powerups or things to keep me playing longer. That said, it was a fun, quick play.

Metro Delivery by michelfontes 2014-05-02T02:41:00

The ending screen always says I make the same number of points (even when I delivered 3 packages, it always said I get 593). I like the fact it took a little thought to try and figure out what the best strategy would be. Controls were a little hard with my touchpad. I would have enjoyed it more if I just needed to press space to get it to switch. The movement is smooth and the sound is a nice mix of futuristic and elevator music.

Subcutaneous - Psychopathology of Grooming by Angrycrow 2014-04-30T14:26:00

This is really intriguing but I can't seem to figure out the controls? The opening animation where the cube rotates and you see the body seems a bit long (I thought the game was broken because I couldn't interact with anything)

Searching Beneath the Surface by Indie Squid 2014-05-01T20:04:00

The graphics are nice and make me want to explore the world. The mood feels a little off with the timer; am I supposed to be appreciating the beautiful world or running around as fast as I can looking for idea orbs? I'm also not sure how the whole game development thing connects to being underwater and starfish but hey, for 48 hours it looks and sounds stellar. Maybe the ending could give a randomized game name idea for a little more of a fun “prize” for playing the game all the way through.
