Not sure on the game-play, I didn't really understand what I was supposed to be doing, However I think that with some work this could be made into a good tree simulator type game, It seems you have an understanding of the science of trees so this could be made into a great educational game.
Though it seems like you bit off more than you could chew for the jam, I dig the idea of growing plants by directing their roots. There have been a few games like this throughout the years in LD and I think this is the first time I have seen a grid-based implementation. A valiant effort for a first LD entry! (decided to come here after you talked to me in the stream chat :P ). If you aren't aware of the karma system, you get pushed by the algorithm if you vote on games and from hearts on your comments on other games. I recommend going and playing/rating! :D

I'm not quite sure what I was doing, but from the sounds of it, you've got a good direction to head. I hope the stream is helpful in improving the game or for your future endeavours! Here's a link to the vod;

Wasn't really sure of the objective, but the basics for a game is there! I like the simulation system for the different nutrients.
I'll very much echo what others have said - it seems like you really get trees and their root systems and I'd love to see a more polished game with clearer gameplay that really dives into that as a simulation space.
some indicators on the tiles would be nice, or some limitation on the growth. the idea itself is pretty nice but it's not a game imho as it is. i could see it in a museum as an interactive tool to teach about roots.
I think there is a good start to a game here, some kind of puzzle mechanics would probably work quite well with this. Or some kind of obstacle to growing the roots in general. I do enjoy the general idea of an in-depth root nurishment simulation though :D
