Brilliant game - got to day 31 but it wasn't easy. I thought I might be able to break the balance by charging rich people exclusively, but turns out that caught up with me. Fun and worth more than one try.

The voices were great. Mechanics as well, seemed pretty balanced to me. I made the mistake of not fining high enough and only making it to day 18
Tricky interplay of mechanics here - a bit on the unforgiving side. XD
I would like to say I think there should be better correlation between population decrease and the severity of the described crime. I saw petty thieves with a population decrease rating WAY over that for arsonists. ^_^;

@ryusui Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I didn't really have much time to test balance, so it might be a little hard. As for the population decrease and crime associated with it, there is a correlation, but it just might be poorly implemented. I have values tied to victims, weapons, type of crime, and objects involved and combine them all to create the population decrease stat. Having played through it myself a few times now since submitting, I see what you mean. There are some harsh crimes with a low value and petty crimes with high values. My algorithm isn't great (should have given greater values for the crime itself than the objects and victims involved). It's something to work on. Thanks again!
Hah, this is fun. I would not be a great judge in this world - my prison was half empty most of the time and I got down to 1 population on my last day. Still made it to day 30, though, so I'll take it. Nice art, too. Good work!
This is an interesting example of embedding morality into gameplay without being super overt about it. The mechanics and goal slowly changed what I focused on. The first day I looked at the crime and thought "murder? That's at least a two year sentence!" On my second playthrough the first thing I asked each day was "are they rich?" It kind of reminded me of Papers Please because of this.
Gameplay-wise, there was no reference point for the lengths of prison time, which made it a bit confusing. There was a reference point for fines, but it would be nice to have the dollar amounts you put in the description in the game itself somehow.
I also love the fact that a reasonable thing to do in this game is to give someone a $300 dollar fine for lighting a pencil on fire. :smile:
Enjoyed reading the descriptions! Made it to 22 days. Would like to see some indicator of if you made the right call later on so one could adjust.
@leroyii Thanks haha glad you enjoyed it! Can't be lighting pencils on fire all willy nilly! And good suggestion. I had trouble with player feedback in LD41 and still had trouble here. Something I gotta work on.
@carlos-giraldo Thanks for the feedback. Interesting suggestion, might be hard to give an indicator on that because part of the game is about finding what works and what doesn't and then trying to get a better score as you keep playing, but I'll take it into consideration.
@larryseinfeld The indicator can come in the form of some funny text when they are released liked the sued the state or a newspaper article. I agree in not giving too much away.
@carlos-giraldo If I understand what you're suggesting, there is no right or wrong answer to how many days you sentence the criminals for. All you're trying to do is keep your population above 0 for as long as possible. Sorry if I misunderstood what you're suggesting.
This was awesome! The concept is great and it fits the theme really well. I thought the guy's "voice" got annoying pretty fast, but what he was saying was really funny. The game is deceivingly challenging. You'd get through a few town upgrades, then out of nowhere you'll have 13 people left. Overall, the game was fun to play, and really creative!
Incredibly unique take on the theme, both in subject matter and in gameplay style. Don't get to see too many menu-driven games like this, so this one was a welcome addition. It was strangely addictive and I ended up playing it for a while. All the flavor text was super-charming. Would love to see more approaches like this.
@michael-coppeta Thanks! Haha, sorry the voice got annoying, I guess you hear it a little too much, but I had fun implementing it. Yeah, the game is a bit challenging as it is, I feel I should have balanced it a little better so people could last longer, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate it!
@happyhour Glad you thought it was unique and addictive. I had trouble coming up with something super original, so I was worried the simplicity of the game would make it end up uninteresting. Thanks for the compliment on the charm and thanks for the kind words. Really appreciate it!

it looks pretty cool and the concept is great but i have weird bug.. its zoomed in somehow- dunno why, i thought unity would automatically set the resolution right. : (

It was mostly just for the jam, but I talked about it with my friend the other day and we started coming up with new ideas for it that I think would be cool, so we'll see. I may revisit it yet. For now my time outside of jams is fixated on a different game idea, but your words are encouraging, thanks!

Brilliant! Oh man. This game has done some things right. Yes, Quite right! I love the intermediate dialog. There is seriously so much freaking hilarious charm to this game. The design is also very good. I love when games use perspective in their UI. Well done. Well done, indeed!

@ratherjolly omg! Thanks so much! I had fun writing the dialogue and implementing the different crimes. The UI is the one thing I think came out best in my game, so I really appreciate the compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much!

Very, very nice! I like the writing and humour, ties in nicely with the mechanics and theme, really feels like it's putting you in a position of making moral decisions. I made it to day 25, I think I'd been under-sentencing people, only 2 of my 11 cells were full at the time!
The game really is very good and well-rounded. It has something of a 'papers please' vibe to it. I feel like it could be made into a full game if you added more progression and mechanics to it.
This is a very nice entry plus is a social critique. We know that kind of thing really happen. Congratulations
