LD42 — Running out of space

Cardshed Wars by KevinTheTuna 2018-08-15T01:52:41Z

Oh I like these!! These games are fun! :)

I had a lot of fun playing this! The graphics are very slick, and I like the variety in cards.

My biggest complaint is that the game is kinda unbalanced at the moment. It seems stalematey, as barracks take a lot to take down and you can generally draw them and place them faster than the other guy can bring out units. Maybe make a type of building that gives you more actions?

Also the upgrade thing seems a little useless in the current state as units only really can do one thing before they're worthless, as they can't change the tile they're attacking after their original target is dead.

The user interface wasn't as intuitive as it could have been... it took me a few minutes to figure out that I couldn't end my turn because the yellow sparks indicated a place I had to click to assign the unit I placed.

It would be cool to have an AI to play against if you put more work into this!

I really liked this one! Hats off to you and your team! :)

Hey! I tried playing, but I couldn't get it to run properly... I went into the "Engine/Binaries/Win64" and ran the program, and was greeted by a window saying it couldn't find the content folder. I copied the content folder in LD42 to Engine, and that made the error go away, but when the game launched it came up with a black screen... am I doing something wrong?

Ah! I can play it now!

Oh wow that got really hard toward the end.

For the first 7 or 8 launches I was like "wait, this doesn't feel too hard... what's the grab here?"

Then I noticed the requirements for each launch section and the time started going quicker... dang.

I like the idea! Fantastic work on getting it finished as far as you did! :)

The game feels really 1-dimensional right now. You could add in audio, better graphics, picking options with keyboard keys and a better user interface, and it wouldn't change that there isn't very much depth. Perhaps you have some ideas already for where you're gonna go next with this, but in case you need some inspiration... maybe adding more seats as the game goes on, adding more launch goals with various rewards for successful missions, adding in external things like budget / politics / earth's current location in space, adding ways the characters interact with each other to make the whole more or less than the sum of its parts, etc. could all make things more interesting strategy-wise.

All in all nice work so far

Back to Base by IndieManiaC 2018-08-15T02:01:23Z

I was able to run the web version.

Wait... hold on... I'm trying to write a review and the corners of my screen keep closing in on me. What the heck brain. This musta got annoying to develop after a while lol

I like how it's coming along! It feels kinda easy and not very exciting atm, but this has a lot of possibilities of ways to make it more interesting (eg. enemies, powerups, etc). I hope you're able to put more into this once you take a break for a few days to get some sleep!

Can you please please please also make it so I can click and hold the mouse button? My finger is tired now lol

Robot intrusion by patrician 2018-08-15T01:26:27Z

I can see where you're headed with this... I like your idea for the theme! I have a few suggestions for you that could help make the game more fun

1. Make the screen area bigger. I know the suicide robots are supposed to be rare, but when they come up, you don't have much time to shoot at them before they hit you, and you can't see them until you have very little time to react. The best defense against them is using the camera width (eg. keeping them to your left / right instead of up / down) and that feels kinda horky. Any mix of the following could help: a. pan the camera out a ways (might be a good idea to do this anyway) b. Put information metrics and other options as menus to the left and right to make the screen area more square c. Add in some fog of war to make the LOS be more of a circle

Right now the game feels extremely bland, but I realize that's largely due to it being a game jam and there not being enough time to polish it as much as you like. Right now it's playable, which is more than I can say for my game lol

Keep up the good work! This game shows a lot of promise for your skills as a game developer... keep practicing and learning new things and your games are just gonna get better!

@crefossus @iamsodarncool thanks for the feedback! :D Glad to hear we're on a good track with the atmosphere / feel... sometimes I get into a rhythm as I'm working on something and think it's way cooler than it actually is in the heat of the moment lol. The white tiles are actually not intentional (that's what the default Unity cube looks like with no texture mesh), but I can picture what you're getting at... we'll have to tinker with that some.

No, it wasn't just you missing interactions with the environment... there's a lot of stuff we want to put in to this yet. I'll post an update once we have something more playable created :)

Thanks for pointing out the mouselook issue! I'll have to check to see what's going on there

malloc() by NULLandKale 2018-08-13T17:51:26Z

I'm at work and can only check out the videos right now... please tell me the gun on the player is autofiring lol! I hate playing games where you have to click to shoot when you just want to hold down the mouse button :P

It sounds like the mouse click sound plays every time the gun shoots though (it sounds like the enemies do a similar thing with mechanical keyboard sounds). I really like that. Definitely makes you feel more hackerish lol

Speaking of hackerish, it'd be fun to see some more unique areas where you have to go through things that people actually go through to fix an malloc() error. (maybe there's more in game... I'll check once I get back this evening)

From the video it looks kinda fun, but could use some more story / theme elements. It seems playable though... not bad for just a weekend of effort :)

I like the text effect you did at the end when the player dies... that was cool :) definitely increased the level of frustration you feel at malloc() lol

Earth Problem by elDrag0n 2018-08-15T02:17:18Z

This was a *lot* of fun. :) Really nice work!

I liked the way you guys made the hexagons all fit together! Tiling a sphere can be a bit tricky.

You guys should definitely keep working this! There are so so many fun things you can do with a "blow up the earth" game... it definitely feels like you guys are scratching the surface of a really fun idea. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

I see what you mean by bugs, but honestly this isn't too bad. Sometimes I wasn't sure when / where I could put volcanos, and I'm still not sure what the blue mountain bug does exactly.

It would be fun if the mass destruction things loaded faster! It gets a bit frustrating waiting for them to recharge lol
