LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Grave Juice by Firebelley 2020-10-14T23:48:43Z

Wow, great job you two, the game is awesome! Cool concept and great delivery.

I really enjoyed the level design, it does a good job of giving you room to play around with the core gameplay hook and it gives just the right amount of challenge to actually make you plan your moves but at the same time keep you curious about what's the next challenge going to be. Well done, really, especially considering how it isn't trivial to play-test your own game and tune those things!

I would say that I found the art style a bit too simple - with such a muted color palette and little amount of elements on screen the picture felt empty and I think that just adding a little bit more variance to the tiles and maybe something for the background would be enough to make it pop.

Sounds are really great, though, hearing the clinking of your armor and stomping of your boots does a good job of grounding you in the game and both sounds and music fit the style well. The sound of a trap hitting the Juice cut right through my heart each time!

Anyways, I've enjoyed this game immensely, I think it's proper fun and I appreciate the fact that I finally know why my packages arrive in the state they do :D

DooooG by Marco Marchitelli 2020-10-14T21:57:00Z

First off, this game instantly deserves all the possible points in the graphics category - the clean and simple visual style works very well for it and serves the purpose of drawing all the attention to Doog, that they absolutely deserve! The critter's animation is extremely cute and just makes you want to go through the levels to see the little thing bob around the level.

I would join to everyone else around here in saying that I've certainly felt the stinging absence of sounds and, especially, music - you peeps have done a great job of creating an adorably-looking little world and having something for the ears would really help with getting into the chill flow it clearly aims to evoke.

I actually enjoyed suddenly being challenged by a maze (and yes, I did feel challenged by it) and I think that it adds a nice flourish to a simple mechanic, I think it was a good call adding it. I think that maybe having so many levels with rather trivial tasks might work to the game's detriment - you've done a good job explaining and showcasing controls so it might be more engaging to let players at "harder" content earlier on.

Regardless, Dooooog is gooooD, good job on bringing some sweetness to our lives :D

Very impressed to see a properly fleshed-out rogue-like, it feels pretty feature-complete, great job y'all! Overall visual style is very consistent and well-made, but so are the rest of the elements, really.

The upgrade/debuff cards are pretty evocative, although it wasn't always easy to guess their effect at a glance. I think I would've been more invested in the upgrade system and each individual run if I had some information about the current upgrades and debuffs, if not in a way of explicit numbers to the side of the screen then in a way of maybe some symbols, icons, visual cue on enemies themselves or other indirect info. I don't mean that as a significant critique and I understand that a) all this was done within tight time-constraints and it already is very impressive fidelity-wise and b) rogue-likes often are obscure by choice.

The biggest issue I've had was with the lack of feedback from the game: I couldn't always understand if I'm hitting enemies or if me simply keeping my swords in their sprites without making an attack damaged enemies and the only way for me to understand I've been damaged at some point during the level was to look up at the health bar.

Anyways, the game got me hooked so Imma bolt - gotta kill that pesky boss!
