LD26 — Minimalism

Great audio and graphics.

The concept is interesting, but I found it rather difficult to use the mouse to control the paddle. It was frustrating to try and quickly move the paddle to catch the ball from going off into oblivion, due to the lack of precision with the paddle and the strange angle the paddle takes making it hard to actually bounce the ball in the direction you would want it to go. I often accidentally bumped the ball with the side of my paddle when I tried to prevent it from falling off the stage.

The starting shot, where you click to release the ball, seems to go in rather imprecise places rather than directly forward from the paddle.

To sum it up, the gameplay, though intuitive, seemed rather frustrating and not very fun for me, though everything else was impressive.

I'm going to be a critic here, hopefully it doesn't sound like I'm being rude (I rather enjoyed the game):

I don't understand the point of 'identifying' a spirit if all it gives you is the name, and you can't really judge whether or not you'll be able to kill it from that.

The weapons also seemed a bit confusing: could I get a weapon that's worse than the weapon I have on already? Should I be cautious which one I pick up because of this?

I couldn't move diagonally, but the generated levels seemed to think I could. I'm not sure if this is some kind of glitch, or if I'm just not good enough at hitting the keys at once.

I found it rather chaotic and difficult to understand what was happening while playing. My square seemed to be so slow that finding a square I could eat was more a matter of where that square spawned than it was my reaction time; it'd have to spawn near me if I wanted to eat it before something else did.

Thank you :)

I kind of had to abandon a platformer game I was planning on making and choose to make this instead because I didn't have enough time to work out all the glitches in my tools and such. If I had planned things out better, I might have had time to add more gameplay elements or factors to make it less of an inevitable loss.

I'm pretty sure the circles eventually start spawning faster than you can fire LOL

Sorry about the lack of control explanations in-game, Hamumu. I figured it'd be OK to just explain the controls in the description here on Ludum Dare.

I don't really understand why lefties can't use WASD. It's just like using arrow keys, but in a different location of the keyboard, regardless of which side your mouse is on, right?

Thanks for playing and commenting, everyone!

I don't know why people are getting stuck in the upper-left corner. You're supposed to remain in the center at all times. A glitch must be causing you to be initialized in the corner, and since movement doesn't actually move your square, you just sit there. Sorry for the glitch!

I didn't have as much of a problem with knowing when blocks were coming as other players seem to have, but jumping over blocks was made difficult by my inability to tell where I was in relation to them, due to the camera's positioning. I kept jumping too late because it looked like I had time, causing my bottom to bump into the wall shortly before I could get past it.

I liked the piano.
