Good concept, but the controls are very clunky.

I like the concept and got this far. Putting the ship together was very finicky because it takes quite a bit of precision to rotate and move in the right direction.

Neat game! I'm a sucker for building a spaceship out of many parts.

Here is my winning ship: THE BLUE DRAGON

I liked the color and shape variety of the parts. I think it's cool that they're different shapes and can lock into each other like that. Also the variety of weapons that shoot directly ahead vs weapons that shoot where your cursor is. The ending was really cool, an interesting boss.

I found the acceleration really tricky. It was a bit slippery when you were just a cube, but if your ship isn't symmetrical it can spiral out of control quickly. Driving forward is usually straightforward enough, but strafing and backing up just broke my brain the more pieces that were on my ship. I would have really liked some kind of consistency in driving. Maybe just make parts that have thrusters actually influence how the ship is propelled? Maybe that'd be too easy gameplay wise, idk. Or maybe the only real thing needed was to have mouse control for attaching things to your ship? By far the most time I spent was trying to get new pieces into reasonable positions, and I'm not sure that's where the fun of your game is.

To answer your questions: I think I would have far more fun building the ship if I wasn't fighting the controls. The different shapes are super cool, I just couldn't really do anything with it because I couldn't drive my ship well enough to have that much intention when building. The only weird physics issue I ran into was sometimes attaching a new ship part threw my ship in a certain direction. Other than that I think everything was intended. I think if there weren't homing shots, I wouldn't be able to pilot any ship effectively enough to end the game. I feel like any ship I build is pilotable in some capacity, but any slight deviation from a straight line and it spirals out of control quickly if the ship isn't symmetrical. Same with getting the ship to stop.

However, it's a lot of words that sound negative, but I definitely liked this one. Even though I tend to not like momentum based physics jam games. You know, I say that every year but I obsessively play at least one each jam..... hmmmmmm.... 🤔 I think with some tweaking this could feel very satisfying to pilot. Even with how it controls now, I still found the fun pretty easily flying around destroying other ships. I really liked the other ships built out of parts, trying to keep as many of their parts intact so I can take em.

Nice work! Blue ship parts ftw!

@googlefrog and @t-c - thanks for playing, and I really appreciate the ship screenshots! I've been wondering how many people would make symmetrical things vs giant blobs of parts, and whether people would have preferences for one type of parts over the others (I personally prefer blue, might not have balanced them quite right).

I'm glad someone other than me liked it enough to finish the game (realized it was a bit longer than intended right before submitting), and that the ending plays reasonably well. First time I've made a true boss fight in a jam game!
