The exe could not run, just throws an error. :( Let me know if it gets fixed so I can play it.
The .exe should work now, please write a comment if there are more problems
Thank you dearly for your feedback, you should be able to play now @larrymartinjr
For your first entry this is really good. The teleport mechanic is really unique. Especially as the play space gets smaller each time you use it. So you really have to think about whether the extra projectiles it shoots are worth it for making it harder to move around in future.
I lasted around a minute and a half in my longest run. I think that's a good length for a jam game. You typically want the player to be able to finish it in 5 minutes or less. The ghost art is quite funny I like it.
Only a few minor things to critique. I would change is the balance on the teleporting. It feels like spamming that can be a little too OP. But the tombstone mechanic definitely helps with that. I was also a little confused why I died sometimes. Whether it was when the ghosts put the tombstones on the portal locations or if you teleport into a ghost.
But honestly those are minor things and for a first entry this is really solid. Well done you should be proud.
I haven't played a lot of axolotl games, and this one felt like it definitely had the title going for it. I think the premise is pretty solid - a tight bullet hell with enemies that can drop blocks that limit your space. The teleport mechanic was also a great idea - I was confused exactly where I was teleporting to (was it random?) and I mostly just moved around the arena, shooting enemies.
Even though the theme is "limited space", I think the starting arena is a bit too small, particularly around the openings between the rooms. Even when starting out, something about the movement felt very difficult to control to be precise. It also didn't really feel like there was a reason for there to be so many segmented rooms, since they would more easily get filled up with blocks anyway and I mostly just stuck to the room I started in. The ability to hold the mouse button to continuously fire would have been nice, especially once the game starts to pile up with enemies. Of course some audio would always be great for a post-jam version.
Overall, I think you've got something good going here - the concept works well with the theme and I enjoyed the general premise of the gameplay. Congrats on producing a game in your first game jam and welcome to Ludum Dare!
I liked the teleporting mechanic, however the game does lack depth. Very good for a first game jam!
Fun game! The teleporting ability was a really good idea. Could be better with some audio or sound effects but still a good game!
Nice entry! I like the idea that every move you make limits your movement. However, I realized that you DON'T need to move. In fact, Moving around sets more limits than giving you flexibility. The enemies are also too weak and if you stick to one place it's impossible for the enemy to drop the rock in the area. Once you get to the center of the area, you just need to shoot around. To avoid this, I suggest adding unavoidable enemies, which forces you to move. Also, ability to remove some rocks would be nice cause you would have strategies to survive longer.
This was fun, and it's one of the games I've played so far that fits the theme the best! I love the idea of having to pay for a teleport by permanently blocking that space. Also, of course the enemies that add the obstacles. I think you could expand on this game for a nice arcade experience!
I wonder if you could make it so that the player could remove barriers. Maybe they have to sink a lot of bullets into them before they're removed, so it's still semi-permanent.
Nice work!
The game was so cute <3 I had fun killing ghosts with teleportation! Using bullets was quite difficult though because the areas where ghosts will actually git hit was very limited and its just easier to teleport for killing. Perhaps something can be done about this?
The premise of having to kill the ghosts before they fill in the space is really cool, it was a lil hard to maneuver around sometimes but it was a fun concept and a fun game! Also congrats on your first game jam!!
Axolotl shooting ghosts and teleporting is quite a unique concept 😁 The teleporting leaving a rock behind to make less space available in the level is pretty original and a good use of the theme. The game itself is a bit rough, not a lot of feedback. Is it bugged on my end or is there really no audio? If not you should probably opt out of the audio category. Could become something cool with a bit more polish and work I think, congrats on finishing your first jam game!
