Small postjam change - I forgot to click a button on the export, so the window sizing would have been weird. No content was added, removed, or changed beyond just clicking setting "2d" and "keep" in export settings E: Links are the same

Great game. Head hurts.

endssgamesstudio 2020-10-06 14:13

niice!

steventus 2020-10-06 17:27

Hey @tuatarian , this is a hidden gem. It's mad good HAHA. I have so much good things to say about this but let's stick with the important ones. First the positives:

1) This game works absolutely well as a rage-game. The kind of games where it is infuriatingly hard. Think meatboy, celeste where there is a naturally higher level of difficulty. The speed is initially quite fast but I got used to it and quite enjoyed it a lot. I did not finish the game but for the time I play, it was good!

2) Simple aesthetics, simple song. I think the BGM could be something different but otherwise, it is amazingly good as is.

3) Simple game mechanic. Just get to the end. A concept that is well visited in mobile games but you really brought it to its extreme on PC form, and in such destructive fashion (in a good way - it's a rage game in my eyes).

Some nitpicks where I see:

1) I think the collisions are not working as intended. Sometimes, I die when I didn't even touch the walls. I think the collisions just need more fine-tuning, and that can be important in games like these.

2) Towards where I stopped, the difficulty of the level becomes less of traversing pass the middle section but instead, getting to the white square at the end. I think you could make do with diversifying your difficulty some more.

Otherwise, this is actually quite a hidden gem (I said that twice now). I play a lot of action games and I absolute loved this!

tuatarian 2020-10-06 20:25

@steventus Thanks! What happened with collisions was that each collider copied the polygon of the drawn version in code, but there was likely a slight position offset, so while they had the same shapes, they were in slightly different spots, breaking the collisions a bit.

This certainly wasn't meant to be a rage game haha, but I never seem to be able to manage anything else in jams

Oh damn. This seems like one of those games that's probably good, but I am just too bad at it. I could not get past the 4th level, and the first three I just brute-forced my way through. I wish I could give better feedback than this, but I could not get to a point where felt like I was in full control of my motion. My old-man brain probably just wanted something more slow-moving square rather than fast and widescreen so it wouldn't seem like it doubled in difficulty after 90 degrees of rotation.

The pros to me:

The music. A great relaxing tune. I *think* it might have been a relatively short loop, but there was sufficient variety in textures that it just kept flowing.

The concept. I Like how you used the theme here, and it's an elegant simple idea. Excellent for a jam.

Just not excellent for *me.*

tuatarian 2020-10-07 17:59

@flaterectomy I agree completely tbh, too hard. Thanks for the review!

spaceguinea-productions 2020-10-08 18:51

This is a really unique take on the theme, good job!

tuatarian 2020-10-10 19:21

@spaceguinea-productions thanks!

greytyphoon 2020-10-11 00:51

Spectacular idea, music is on point, graphics are minimalistic and very well suited to the gameplay, I applaud the choice.

This game is IMPOSSIBLE. I might have brute-forced my way through another level if only there was a way to tell how far along I was. Something as simple as the wall colors moving up the rainbow to red would have done the trick.

I took me a while to realize that I don't have to hold down the mouse button while I'm playing, only clicking to start. As a result, I died often still holding down the button, and was for a second or so my character would respawn/rush to my pointer/die/play the death sound every few frames. The noise spam is pretty aggressive, I'd recommend making sure it's a different click event for every life!

tuatarian 2020-10-11 05:06

@greytyphoon I agree completely and those are all spectacular ideas. I started pretty much on the last day so I didn't manage to get any polish || playtesting in. If I release a postjam balanced version, those are all things I will do first.

toccio94 2020-10-11 13:12

Sadly I stopped at level 3. The concept is ok, the music was nice, but the game is too complex, too fast. At first, I didn't even know what to do, if I clicked it seemed the game was glitching.

I really don't know how can you play this, it has also given me nausea, something I've almost never experienced in a game (and I play VR too).

I've two major suggestions: 1. the first levels should be way easier to let me understand what I'm supposed to do 2. the level should start to rotate slower so at least I've 1 second to setup myself. It starts so fast I don't even know how to move or position

I think that with some improvement it could be fun, but as now it is too hard and unfair.

I don't want to sound harsh, you manage to transform your idea into a game in 72 hours and that alone is great. It just could be more playable for us mortal.

tuatarian 2020-10-12 07:51

@toccio94 Agreed entirely, Thanks for the feedback!

thedoctoroftime 2020-10-12 08:54

Really fun and enjoyable game! I do wish it was kind of slower since my mouse is kind of slow lmao. Still it's great and the music is great! I remember raging when the tiks kept happening, so triggering I love it!

tuatarian 2020-10-12 16:01

@thedoctoroftime Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!

nacho-hon 2020-10-13 07:33

Such a cool idea, but I couldn't play for long as I started getting dizzy. Might say more about me than the actual game. Also wouldn't mind a slower ramp up in the spinning to slowly get acquainted with the game. Other than, it's an original idea that's well executed. Cheers!

catomag 2020-10-13 13:06

WHERE ARE YOUR FINGERS?

catomag 2020-10-13 13:07

The game was challenging and definately nausiating, but that little melody and lofi music in the background kept me engaged.

tuatarian 2020-10-14 02:03

@nacho-hon I can see why, honestly. Cheers!

@catomag I lost my fingers in a car accident 13 years ago. Thanks for the compliment about the music! Was fairly proud of that one

triceratopsjjj 2020-10-16 19:26

Brilliant game idea! It was very difficult, but it was fun :)

shimali 2020-10-18 17:05

Fun game. Sometimes I raged a lot until i managed to finish a level. Is there a Key to get back to the Menu or did I not get it? the only way to close the game was to Alt-F4.

Found out you can cheat the first levels when you have more than one monitor and point the curser far enough to the right, you immediately finish the level^^

But still a nice game and a gread idea!

thulium-games 2020-10-19 00:53

Really fun but Super difficult.

tuatarian 2020-10-20 00:34

@shimali No key to quit, ran out of time

@thulium-games Thanks! Appreciate that

@triceratopsjjj Thanks man!
