Obviously I had a little fun with it. Good way to learn a library, though--and good effort.
(And if you can, try to play my game again. I fixed the instructions to make it a little bit more obvious how to shoot collectors.)
It looks like your not re drawing the background, that why your getting the "ghost" ships.

By the way, the Windows pygame installer CRASHES unless you run it as administrator... (cheap!)
Once I got it running, well... arrow keys did move the UFO. But that was it. Is that all there is? If so, well... umm... I'm sure it was a good learning experience, and for that, well done.
