Congrats on your first Ludum Dare! This is a really solid first game. Here are some thoughts, in no particular order:
+ The collision detection is a little off -- sometimes it would give me a square even if I wasn't quite touching it yet, or not give it to me even when I was touching it.
+ I like the colors you chose to use. The graphics are very simple, but the colors still give a good indication of what is what.
+ A little BG audio would go a long way here...even simple little loop would make the game a lot more engaging. To see what I mean, try playing without the "pick up item" sound effect, then add it back in and see how much it does for the game :)
+ I like how the squares seem to move around randomly, like they have minds of their own. That made the game different each time!
+ I was a little confused about the controls at first. I might have put something like "Use arrow keys to move" right under the "Collect the red rectangles" dialog at the beginning.
+ The controls were very smooth! A lot of games on here lagged for me, but yours was fine.
Again, nice job! I can't wait to see how much you've improved for next time :)
wow if the theme was Glitchy this would have won, nice try.
