Thanks ananasblau - much appreciate the feedback. It's my first venture into Twine, so thanks for those suggestions.
No it's not the "final" version, I've just updated my entry now with the entire story..but I have a few hours left for some candy - images and sounds!
And to directly answer your question, no it's not Twine that forces the page / link structure. I grew up on Choose your Own Adventure books, but you're right...these days it's probably better to try and update that type of presentation.
TBH I find the layout options of Twine pretty undesirable in general. If I have time, I'll try to hack up the CSS to create something a little more fetching...
