Good idea however I'm not so sure about the death from above as it's a bit frustrating when you can't see when the blocks are coming. Maybe add a warning or slow down the blocks as they fell so fast you don't have time to get out of the way.
I really like the concept. One bit of advice would be to adjust the speed of the character and falling blocks so that it's possible to dodge them.
I was positively pleased with the crushing death mechanic. Where I first didn't see it coming I thought it was pretty cleverly thought of. Love the idea of pushing blocks to create a staircase to climb. Gameplay wise the controls are a bit slow and that makes it a bit frustrating at time. Overal, good job!
The lava adds nice tension, but it's a little too difficult to predict where the blocks are falling from to get very far
