Two issues I have: First, there's no way to win or lose (well, you can waste all your money without having built a valid shop, but that doesn't end the game), no reason to want to make money, and second, there's not a lot of progress in money making. I think that's because there are a fixed number of shoppers (shouldn't a better mall attract more shoppers?), so adding more shops barely makes any difference in income. Once you have ten or so shops, it never gets notably faster. That was sad, because I was having fun expanding my mall, but expanding was really slow, only adding one block every 2 or 3 seconds (I also think it lets you put floor on floor, so holding the button down wastes lots of money - not sure, though).
But it was fun, I kept cranking along until I had about doubled the mall size, and watched the mini-mallists do their thing and watched my money click up. I enjoyed it. Don't think you really did much with the theme other than mock it, though.
i think hamumu pretty much nailed it. The one big change that'd make this alot more fun is having the number of shoppers change with its size etc..
On the flip side, if you have multiple shops the shoppers will often go tomore than one of them, so you still do get a difference in income by adding them.
Yep, Hamumu pretty much nailed it. It's a fun game, and with a bit more work, could be made much better. It's one of the few games I've gone back to and played multiple times.
I think this was a good use of the theme, but like said, the game didn't really offer any interesting challenges and you couldn't really fail either. It was fun to build the mall up a bit though and watch the little people run around in it. This could be something. I hope you improve upon it after the compo.
I wish there were a few more store types that I could build...
darn, just getting a crash when I run it. (vista64)
Yeah, pretty much what other people said. Doesn't really play as a game, but is a little fun anyway.
"Mini-mallists don't like this, and therefore they may crash your computer in protest!" :)
Seems tad unfinished..
A great small sandbox "game" (more of a tech demo really, though). The AI seems quite well written (or then you've just explained it's randomness well ;)). Had some trouble expanding the floor, it wasn't really working as easily as I thought it would. A pretty nifty idea, but I'm not sure if it's a game yet. Would be great if you developed this further. The name is a nice pun. :)
Just broke on mine

At each entrance I installed clothing stores specializing in mini-tees and thongs. Those preppy teens love their mini-tees. My second installment was a series of Chinese food buffets with heavy breading on the general's chicken. (Incidentally, this is where I hosted the first annual shareholders meeting with my venture capitalists). Anyway... my customers, stuffed with MSG and special sauce, were now too fat for their mini-tees and thongs and thus had to buy from my third installment: a big and tall outlet featuring maternity dresses. Those fat hos love their maternity dresses. But I had a problem: my bedsheet-laden bitches were too fat to leave the store by themselves. Their tiny feet, with flesh hanging over like a stack of pancakes, couldn't even budge. But I'd planned for this. That's why I'm a pro. The center of the store is an electronics outlet, specializing in mini-scooters and high-end wagons. Those sweat-and-sour gravity sinks put their scooters in second gear and rolled their flabby asses out of my mall, leaving me with $$$
I enjoyed the humor -- girls hitting all the clothing stores, dragging their boyfriends, etc. It would be nice to somehow 'unlock' more shops or something, so there was something new to do/look forward to.
I left it running, then it crashed, I must have made too much money. This might become a good game once you add goals and diversity.
I actually had a good bit of fun playing with this one but I definitely dig the sim-type genre of 'game' anyway. I had multiple crashes though which was a bummer because they always came once I had about doubled my malls size and it was just getting interesting watching the people make their shopping decisions.. ;) I love the little price tags flying by as they purchase away, that was a great touch! There is definitely some kinda bug (like Hamumu pointed out) where if you move the mouse while laying down 'floor' spaces it sucks your money away REALLY fast. I had to single click to lay floor to not lose my millions. ;) Great little experiment though for sure!
Nice, pretty graphics. Love the way the swarms of consumers move so fast. I made soooo much money off those suckers. Would be nice to be able to save your mall ... maybe use it as a screensaver or something.
App failed for me. XP Pro.
crash on startup (XP64) - debugging the executable provides the following:
An unhandled exception of type 'System.TypeInitializationException' occurred in game.exe
Additional information: The type initializer for 'SdlDotNet.Graphics.Video' threw an exception.
Debian users: apt-get install libtaoframework-sdl1.2-cil libmono-system2.0-cil libgdiplus
It was an amusing idea and an entertaining toy for a few minutes, but it kept crashing: first it couldn't open FreeSans.ttf and then shop.png.
ran kinda laggy at times for me. i have a fairly stout machine (amd2 5600+, x1950 video). the game was playable though.
i spent some time just playing with the game. this is more like a toy though. there is no end to the game. its like sim city.
